Evanston 2nd Alarm fire 6-5-13

Evanston Fire Department units responded to reports of smoke coming from the rear of a 3-story building at 1301 Judson Avenue around 2:15 this afternoon. When Evanston Battalion 21 turned down the street and saw the amount of smoke, he immediately upgraded the Code 3 response to a MABAS Box Alarm. The building, at the north east corner of Judson and Dempster, is a multi-unit, u-shaped, three-story building. Fire was in the attic and vented through the roof quickly. After making an interior attack, conditions worsened and all companies were ordered out of the building. A ladder pipe was put to work on the Dempster Street side of the building from Evanston Truck 22. Truck 23 was to the roof in front of the building on Judson. The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd alarm which brought additional companies.

After the attic and roof fire was knocked down, companies went back into the building to hit the remaining fire, conduct the secondary searches, and then begin to overhaul the interior.

In addition to five Evanston engines and their two trucks, mutual aid at the scene consisted of engines from Wilmette and Winnetka, a squad from Morton Grove, and trucks from Skokie and Northfield.

The fire was contained to one side of the structure and did not communicate to the second floor.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene, both arriving after the fire had been knocked down. Some images and a video from Larry are in this email. Images from Tim should be forthcoming.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Box Alarm 4-3-13

Shortly after 8PM Wednesday evening, a caller reported a basement fire at 884 Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Lake County. The area off of Inverrary Road west of Milwaukee Avenue is covered by the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD, and there is only one point of access into and out of the subdivision.

First arriving units were greeted by the homeowner outside the unit with severed burns to both feet. They reported heavy smoke pushing out of the center unit and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 (working fire) and then immediately to a Box Alarm. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods had two engines, a quint, three ambulances and two chief officers on the scene. Mutual aid with engines came from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Northbrook. Squads came from Prospect Heights (RIT) and then from Loncolnshire-Riverwoods Station 51. Deerfield was at the scene with a truck, and additional ambulances came from Lake Zurich and Wheeling. Chief officers came from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Deerfield, and Mundelein.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods paramedics transferred patient care of the homeowner to the Wheeling ambulance, which transported to Condell Hospital. Two lines went into the fire unit and an additional line was pulled to an exposure unit, while Buffalo Grove firefighters went to the roof to ventilate. The fire was stopped quickly and contained to the unit of origin, but not before burning through the first floor ceiling to create a hole on the second floor. A dog perished in the fire.

The Mess Canteen was at the scene and setup near Lincolnshire-Riverwoods’ new dive/rehab unit.

Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were both at the scene. Images and a video from Larry are in this post and images from Tim are forthcoming.

Glenview Box Alarm 11-3-12

The Glenview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building in unincorporated Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10PM. Additional calls reported a fire in a third floor unit of the three-story apartment building and that a resident on the balcony might jump. Glenview Engine 7 was the first fire unit on the scene and found heavy fire pushing out of a third floor unit with a frantic tenant on the balcony. They upgraded the alarm to a box alarm.

As firefighters prepared for a rescue, they urged the occupant not to jump. Subsequently the resident escaped by climbing to the adjacent balcony and then dropping down one floor as firefighters were able to get a ground ladder in place.

The fire was knocked down quickly with some extension to the neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were pumping at the scene and Truck 14 had their main to the roof. Mutual aid companies included Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, and Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene but both arrived after the fire had been knocked down. A few images have been posted from the scene.
