When the Park Ridge Fire Department’s tower ladder was irreparably damaged during this summer’s fire at the Marathon gas station, Fire Chief Jeff Sorensen asked to fast-track ordering of a replacement truck, which was scheduled to happen in the next fiscal year anyway.

It takes a year to get a fire truck built, and Sorensen’s efforts to order in 2019 were blocked by the Finance Committee from choosing a sole source provider.

He and the finance department are now seeking approval, officially, to have the city join the Houston-Galveston Area Council, a Texas-based buying cooperative which specializes in detailed analysis of fire department trucks. The request, for joining to get access to detailed specifications from various companies, was approved unanimously by the six council members attending Monday, Dec. 2.

While the Park Ridge Fire Department was planning to replace its tower ladder in the next year or so, the fire in July at the former Marathon gas station at Oakton and Northwest Highway has radically moved up the priorities for ordering.

Fire Chief Jeff Sorensen reported Monday night (Oct. 28) at the Committee of the Whole meeting that two of the ladder’s three sections had been damaged and no longer can be used.

United Laboratories (UL) inspected it and condemned the ladder, which failed its strength test.

The department was told that trying to repair the ladder would cost a quarter of a million dollars, and it still would not be safe to use because the new parts would not fit together well enough. Exposure to a corrosive material during the fire also degraded metal fittings and connections.

The trade-in value the 2001 aerial truck might have brought before the July fire is much reduced.

Currently they are using it as a service truck with equipment, ground ladders and provide a fire pump.

To make the tour ladder last as long as possible and reduce unnecessary mileage, the department recently outfitted Rescue 36, a smaller vehicle, to run EMS calls in place of the truck.

With mileage that now tops 79,000 miles, the department knew the truck would need to be replaced soon, but it had not scheduled ordering another until Fiscal Year 2021, which starts next May.

A new truck is estimated at $1.4 million. Advancing the delivery date by six months would be an important step forward.

After contacting companies which manufacture fire trucks to price specific features they need, the department learned that prices for all manufacturers are expected to go up after the end of the year. There are not many companies, and the sales people prefer to take orders for several at a time. It takes about a year to fill an order.

Pre-budget discussions will begin in November during capital improvement and levy consideration.

Less than 48 hours after Park Ridge Firefighter Michael Isom and his family lost their home, the GoFundMe page set up to help them had raised more than $15,000. At present, donors have pledged more than $19,000 of the $20,000 goal as of Sunday. Aside from the loss of their home, Isom and his family are OK, but they’ll need time.

A fire at about 1 a.m Thursday in Malta claimed the home of one of Malta Fire Department’s own. There were no injuries, but the home of Fire Capt. Mike Isom and his family in the 500 block of East Jefferson Street was destroyed. The family stayed with friends overnight.

The Malta Fire Department had assistance from fire departments in DeKalb, Creston, Shabbona, Kirkland, as well as Genoa EMS.

An application made on behalf of the Park Ridge Fire Department by Fire Executive Officer Paul Lisowski last year has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist the department in replacing extrication equipment. The current equipment is wearing out.

The total application was for $47,000. FEMA will pay $43,091 (90 percent) and the city pays 10 percent. FEMA, however, had trimmed the deadline to accept the package to a maximum of 30 days. The grant was approved unanimously and with great enthusiasm on Sept. 23 at the city council’s finance committee meeting and advances to the full council’s consent agenda on Monday, Oct. 7.

An approximate total of grants which Lisowski has obtained since joining the department currently indicates he has saved the city almost $1.2 million.

Michael Frazier, 17, a recent Maine South High School graduate, was honored by the Park Ridge City Council at an Aug. 5 meeting for his life-saving actions to help a fellow student who collapsed while jogging around the school’s track in April.

Kevin Tomsia, the student who suffered the collapse, survived the incident and is doing well — thanks to Frazier and the more than two dozen people who came to his aid, all of whom were recognized by the Park Ridge City Council.

To honor Frazier’s life-saving actions, the Park Ridge Professional Firefighters Association gave him a scholarship to cover tuition for his emergency medical technician certification. That certification will be the beginning of Frazier’s post-secondary education at Harper College to become an emergency medical technician and paramedic.

A fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at the former Harvey’s Marathon gas station at Oakton Street and Northwest Highway in Park Ridge on Wednesday afternoon. Heavy black smoke covered the immediate area while firefighters from several communities worked to get the fire under control.

A Niles firefighter and a Schiller Park firefighter suffered minor burns while fighting the fire and were treated and released from Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

The building was loaded with approximately 90,000 pounds of calcium peroxide, a hazardous material that can be used as a decontaminate in soil. The material was brought to the building the previous day. The station has been vacant for several years.
