The Glenview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building in unincorporated Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10PM. Additional calls reported a fire in a third floor unit of the three-story apartment building and that a resident on the balcony might jump. Glenview Engine 7 was the first fire unit on the scene and found heavy fire pushing out of a third floor unit with a frantic tenant on the balcony. They upgraded the alarm to a box alarm.
As firefighters prepared for a rescue, they urged the occupant not to jump. Subsequently the resident escaped by climbing to the adjacent balcony and then dropping down one floor as firefighters were able to get a ground ladder in place.
The fire was knocked down quickly with some extension to the neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were pumping at the scene and Truck 14 had their main to the roof. Mutual aid companies included Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, and Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene but both arrived after the fire had been knocked down. A few images have been posted from the scene.
This from Steve Redick:
100 block of N Wisner Tuesday evening … apparently there were workers on the roof and they were reporting the fire. As I arrived the horns were being sounded to evacuate , and it sounds like all the searches had been completed. Fire was showing from the rear attic area … but due to the setting sun and access problems it was difficult to shoot. The tower ladder was put to work as well as some exterior handlines, and the exposures were well covered. I was able to finally see the North Maine rebuild, and Desplaines had the E1 (which I think may be a spare) working a large diameter supply line to Park Ridge. It was over pretty quick but caused a lot of damage and a good part of the roof was burned through. I have posted the video here.
Severe storms passed through the city and suburbs late in the afternoon on Saturday keeping many fire departments busy. Park Ridge and North Maine units were picking up from a storm related call shortly after 5PM when a call was received reporting smoke from a house next door to another home with a gas leak. North Maine Engine 1 was first on the scene at 110 N. Home Avenue and reported smoke showing from two sides of a large two-story modern home. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire shortly after the first units arrived.
Units on the still alarm were Park Ridge with an engine, tower, two ambulances and the battalion chief, Niles Ambulance 3, plus North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1. The Code 4 brought Niles Truck 2, DesPlaines Engine 62, Glenview Engine 7, Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, tower 158 from Rosemont, plus Squad 4 from Morton Grove.
Companies entered the house and found clear conditions on the second floor until they opened the scuttle to the attic. They encountered high heat, heavy smoke, and active fire. Portions of the attic were finished with a plywood floor which hampered efforts to gain access to parts of the attic from some of the second floor rooms.
Two lines were used in the house and multiple holes were cut in the roof. The high humidity and extensive interior work necessitated an upgrade to a Box Alarm for relief companies. This brought engines from River Grove, Norwood Park, and Wheeling, a tower from Mt. Prospect, a squad from Skokie, an ambulance from Buffalo Grove, and Des Plaines Battalion 9. The fire was struck out around 6:30PM.
Larry Shapiro went to the scene and submitted several images.

Niles Fire Department Truck 2 is now running with the 1997 Pierce 105′ Quint that was purchased by the department last year. After a series of repairs and upgrades, the X-Trotwood, OH truck which was mentioned HERE is replacing the 75′ Quint 2 (X-North Maine FPD) which returns to reserve status.
