I took advantage of a slow Saturday (6/17) to go see some rigs that I do not normally get an opportunity to see. Far south suburban Manhattan Fire Protection District was training in a fairly large late-1800’s farm house which is currently owned by the park district. Once the training was over, the old house was burned to the ground. It was kind of an interesting setup as there was a historic round barn which needed to be protected so they had Peotone’s Truck 14 set up and ready just in case of an emergency.

Manhattan FPD does not ask for donations by phone

The Southtown Star has an article warning about a false campaign for donations on behalf of the Manhattan FPD.

A possible scam artist soliciting donations to benefit Manhattan firefighters called the wrong person — a captain with that fire district. Now, fire officials want area residents to know they are not soliciting donations by telephone and people who get solicitation calls should be wary of the pitch.

A woman who identified herself as “Cindy” called Manhattan Fire Protection District Capt. Gerald Kinsella and asked him to donate to the Manhattan Firefighters Association. Knowing that the department was not doing any telemarketing for donations, Kinsella strung her along for more information.

She asked for a “red” $100 donation, “white” $50 donation or “blue” $35 donation, whatever he was “comfortable” with. When he asked her to send him information, she got crafty.

“She said she would send it but would really like a dollar amount since they’d be sending a receipt,” Kinsella wrote in an email to Chief Dan Forsythe explaining the call. “Due to the fact that it is ‘tax deductible’ they cannot ‘legally’ send it without an amount.”

By dialing any number with the local 478 prefix, a caller could possibly reach someone served by the fire district who might be duped into contributing.

The fire district’s public education coordinator, Dawn Cupples, said the district never solicits money by phone. It mails out an annual fundraiser letter, which will be going out next month with tickets for a summer bash scheduled for July 19. Residents who buy tickets are asked to mail checks to the fire station. No one ever calls on the phone to collect, Cupples said.

“We are trying to let residents know what we actually do, vs. these people who are using our name,” she said.

The woman who identified herself as “Cindy” told Kinsella she actually was collecting for the firefighters through a Joliet-based fundraising organization. But the vice president of the organization that “Cindy” named told the SouthtownStar it works primarily with churches and schools, does not do phone solicitations and is not calling anyone asking for donations for Manhattan firefighters.

Cupples said residents should never give money to anyone soliciting donations by phone for the Manhattan Firefighters Association.

Manhattan to add on to firehouse

The Southtown Star has an article about a planned addition to the fire station in Manhattan:

The Manhattan Village Board has approved a site plan for a $2.4 million addition to Fire Station 1 that will not be financed with public money, Fire Chief Dan Forsythe said. Forsythe told the board this past week that the Manhattan Fire Protection District has accumulated $1 million since 1996 from building impact fees and another $500,000 from ambulance fees. The remaining $900,000 will come from a 10-year loan at about 3.5 percent interest that will have a payment of about $120,000 a year, he said.

The fire district considered other options, including renting space or buying land and building a new station. Forsythe said the addition is the best option at a reasonable cost.

The site plan includes a brick facade, a new monument sign and extending and paving the parking lot. The village board’s approval is subject to final engineering approval. Forsythe said he expects construction to start June 1 and take six to eight months.

On or about April 15th, the five fire districts being dispatched by the Lincoln-Way Public Safety Communications Center will be changing their apparatus numbers. This will affect their radio call signs as well. The apparatus number will match the station number as follows:

Apparatus out of East Joliet Station number 1 will carry the designation of East Joliet Station #53
Apparatus out of East Joliet Station number 2 will carry the designation of East Joliet Station #52
Apparatus out of East Joliet Station number 3 will carry the designation of East Joliet Station #51

Apparatus out of New Lenox Station number 1 will carry the designation of New Lenox Station #61
Apparatus out of New Lenox Station number 2 will carry the designation of New Lenox Station #62

The way this will work is an engine responding from Station #81 will have a radio call sign of Manhattan Engine 81. An ambulance responding from Station #93 will have a radio call sign of Mokena Ambulance 93. A chief responding from Station #71 will have a radio call sign of Frankfort Chief 71.

The new numbering system and radio call sign change will be for all responses, including all mutual aid responses. If you are in Will County, you will not have to change any of your recommends, since these changes are made in the county CAD and will reflect in your recommends as well.

Manhattan – new unit at Sta. 2, Mounting of foam tank from a foam trailer used by the BP tank farm in Manhattan on the chassis of the former 1986 Chevy/Monroe tanker. The Monroe tanker is no longer in use.

Frankfort house fire 11-22-11

Karl Klotz took in a fire this afternoon in Frankfort. He reports the following:

Frankfort full-still 11/22/2011: 20111 Rosewood Drive. Frankfort Truck Co. 2 arrived to find this two-story, frame dwelling well involved in the front portion. The fire appeared to have started in the garage area of the dwelling. Crews made an aggressive defensive attack before making entry into the dwelling. No injuries were reported, but several cats were rescued from the fire. Companies from Frankfort, Matteson and Manhattan responded to the scene.
