Commercial building fire in Des Plaines, 12/29/17

Des Plaines firefighters were called to 1108 E. Oakton this afternoon (12/29/17) for a fire in the Car-X Muffler shop, half a mile from Des Plaines Station 62. Upon arrival Engine 62 reported a fire and initiated an interior attack. The size up reported fire visible from two sides and through the roof very shortly thereafter. Companies were soon ordered out of the building to initiate an exterior attack. Both Des Plaines tower ladders were put to work as the incident was upgraded to a working fire.

The B-sector wall failed within minutes and portions of the roof went with it. A MABAS Box Alarm was requested bringing additional resources to the scene. Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 was sent to the rear for a third elevated master stream supplied by a Rosemont engine.

A partial list of units at the scene included: Des Plaines Engine 61, Engine 62, Engine 63, Tower 61, Tower 63, Ambulance 61, Ambulance 62, Ambulance 63, Battalion 61, 6100, and 6101. Mutual aid companies included: Park Ridge Tower 36 and Ambulance 36, Rosemont Engine 156, Glenview Engine 8, North Maine Engine 1, Elk Grove Township Engine 11, Schiller Park Tower 5 and Battalion 5, Morotn Grove Quint 4, Skokie Tower 16, Northbrook Ambulance 10, Wheeling Ambulance 24, a warming bus from Mount Prospect, and Elk Grove Ambulance 7.

Several contributors were at the scene and this is the first of what will be several posts.

3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-17 (more)

An interesting historical note about the 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-17, there was a 2-11 Alarm fire in the same building on April 24, 1983. We have not found any of our contributors that has photos of that fire.

Thursday morning (at the peak of morning rush hour) 2945 Milwaukee Ave. Fire was in a 2-story furniture store, with the top floor completely closed to the outside by brick veneer. Heavy fire throughout, burned through and collapsed what I believe was a bowstring truss roof. Photo conditions were tough as there were areas of bright sun and deep shade. Finally got to oberve squad 2’s new “snorkel” fully extended and in operation as well as some tower ladder operations and the spare Snorkel. Also interesting to see Engine 69 hooked up to a hydrant in front of Engine 91’s former quarters at 3000 N Elbridge very close to the rear of the fire building. The Libertyville Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Jamaican Gardens North located at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). First companies found heavy smoke obscuring visibility on Route 176 and had a significant fire burning on the east end of the property near what was the retail store entrance. An attack was initiated and the fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.

The business had closed to the public several years ago and was reportedly vacant. Libertyville Tower 461 and Engine 463 were deployed on the eastern side of the property. The fast moving fire quickly spread to additional buildings on the west side, where access was limited. Lake Forest Tower Ladder 421 was positioned on the northern driveway and Countryside Engine 412 was at the northwest corner. As the fire grew in intensity, the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm bringing additional units to the scene.

A special request was made for the Division 1 MVU out of Wheeling, but the unit was not deployed and subsequently released before the box was struck out.

The two tower ladders deployed master streams in addition to multiple hand lines and two multi-versals. Along with Libertyville Engine 463 and the Countryside engine, Lake Bluff Engine 517 and Knollwood Engine 44 were also pumping. The fire was struck out after roughly three hours.

Other fire departments with companies at the scene were Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads, Highland Park with a truck, plus Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with engines. Chief officers came from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest.

Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro were at the scene.

This is the first in a three part series covering this fire.
