A 2-11 Alarm fire today at 6730 South Shore Drive also required an EMS Plan II. The Chicago Tribune reports:
Two men died and a woman was seriously injured when an extra-alarm fire broke out in a high-rise on South Shore Drive this morning.
All three victims suffered full cardiac arrest, apparently from breathing in smoke, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
One of the men was in his 30s and the other was in his 40s, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The first man was pronounced dead at 9:54 a.m. at the University of Chicago Medical Center and the other was pronounced later at Jackson Park Hospital, officials said.
The men were found on the seventh floor and the woman was found in the lobby of the building in the 6700 block of South Shore Drive, also in full cardiac arrest, Langford said. Paramedics were able to revive her with CPR and took her to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Langford said.
A firefighter suffered minor injuries, officials said.
The fire broke out around 8:40 a.m. and was quickly raised to a 3-11 alarm with a call for at least 10 ambulances, officials said. Firefighters on a ladder battled the blaze on the seventh floor while firefighters on another ladder tried to reach residents on balconies on the other side of the building.
Langford said the fire may have started in the bedroom of an apartment on the 7th floor. The blaze spread to an apartment on the 8th floor, he said. The fire was under control by 9:25 a.m
The fire department did not order an evacuation of the building, telling residents it was safer to stay in their apartments, Langford said. Firefighters then went door to door, checking on them.
Water from hoses and hydrants had turned to sheets of ice around the building. Dozens of fire trucks, ambulances and police cars lined South Shore Drive.

One person died and a 5-year-old girl suffered burns to her entire body during a fire in the Lawndale neighborhood that lasted only a few minutes early Saturday, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
An adult female died in the fire, fire officials said, with the other three victims still reported in critical condition. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not been notified.
The 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, with burns to 35 percent of his body, were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County from their home in the 4200 block of West 21st Place.
A total of six people were taken to area hospitals, four in serious-to-critical condition. Police said the six were all from the same family. The fire broke out after 4:30 a.m.
The first responding engine didn’t see any fire but found one victim on the front lawn, said Chicago Fire Department District Chief Peter Van Dorpe. But the fire “vented,” meaning a window blew out and fed the fire oxygen, and immediately spread through the first floor.
Van Dorpe said the first battalion chief at the scene called an EMS Plan 1, for an extra five ambulances, and escalated the alarm to bring more firefighters to the scene.

Chicago firefighters responded to a house fire on Saturday at 10728 South Prairie. They rescued a 66-year old woman, but did not find a young boy in the attic. The Chicago Tribune reports:
Firefighters were called to the 1 1/2 story frame home about 10 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming largely from the basement of the home, said Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor. The fire was traveling up the inside of the home’s walls rapidly, he said.
A boy was found dead in an attic crawlspace several hours after firefighters rescued a woman from a Roseland neighborhood house fire this morning, fire officials said.
A woman, 66, was rescued from the home in the 10700 block of South Prairie Avenue, but the boy, believed to be age 7, was found in an attic crawlspace by fire investigators several hours after the fire was extinguished, officials said.

Omariontae Tucker died of carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot from the fire, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The office ruled the boy’s death an accidental death, officials said.

The fire that claimed a 7-year-old boy over the weekend also killed his grandmother, who died at a suburban hospital on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
An autopsy was scheduled for this morning for Barbara Scott, who was rescued from a home in the 10700 block of South Prairie Avenue Saturday morning, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and fire officials.
Medical examiner’s officials said Scott was 61, while officials initially said she was 66.
