Downers Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from mysuburbanlife.com:

Downers Grove Fire Chief James G. Jackson Sr. will retire Aug. 31 after 30 years with the department.

“First and foremost, Jim is a firefighter. He’s used his expertise in fire science and incident response to make our community safer,” Village Manager Dave Fieldman said in the release. “His engaging leadership style has created great relationships throughout the village.”

Under Jackson’s leadership, the department attained many honors and distinctions. Most notably, the department achieved an ISO I status and established nationally recognized education programs. His leadership brought advancements in technology, community outreach, labor relations and data-based initiatives for the community, the release stated.

“I’ve always talked about making your mark on the organization and leaving the department in a better place, but most importantly it’s about making sure the firefighters have the training and tools they need to help them serve the community with excellence,” Jackson said in the release.

Jackson began his career in Downers Grove in 1987. He rose through the ranks as firefighter, lieutenant and deputy chief. He served on many committees, continually initiating model improvements. He was named interim fire chief in 2009 and became chief in February 2010. Jackson also served as president of the DuPage Fire Chiefs Association.

“Our community has benefited greatly from Chief Jackson’s many talents and dedication to the fire service, and he will be sorely missed,” Mayor Martin Tully said in the release.

The selection of an interim fire chief, who will serve until a permanent appointment is made, is underway.

thanks Dennis

The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) and the International Fire Service Training Association at Fire Protection Publications, Oklahoma State University (IFSTA/FPP/OSU) are pleased to announce that Marsha P. Giesler has been selected as the 2017 Dr. Anne W. Phillips Leadership in Fire Safety Education Award recipient. Ms. Giesler is the Public Education Officer for Downers Grove Fire Department.

Marsha Giesler is the model of a local fire safety educator whose excellence in program design and implementation has transcended well beyond her work at the local level. Her advocacy for fire safety education and community risk reduction has significantly impacted the state of Illinois as well as fire safety educators across America.

Ms. Giesler’s work fulfills the spirit of Dr. Phillips’ minority report to America Burning by inspiring others to prevent fires as the best method to reduce burn injuries and fire loss. Her work as an excellent and enthusiastic educator has placed her in the position to advocate for fire prevention in Illinois and to help provide leadership and guidance as Illinois mandated fire safety education and community risk reduction for company officer and chief officer certification. Marsha can be described as a disciple of Dr. Phillips as her passion today matches the lifetime passion for fire safety of Dr. Phillips.

Because of her creativity in developing best practices, a willingness to share ideas, and an ability to mentor and inspire others, Marsha’s ideas have been adopted by fire services across the country, including the NFPA Education Section. Downers Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

Three people were hospitalized after a house fire early Saturday in west suburban Downers Grove.

Firefighters were called at 4 a.m. for reports of a fire in the two-story, single-family home in the 4000 block of Washington Street, according to a statement from the Downers Grove Fire Department. They arrived to find thick smoke and fire showing on two sides of the house.

A neighbor was trying to help a resident trapped at a second-floor window when firefighters arrived. They entered the home, but were not ale to take the person down the stairs because of the intensity of the fire. They instead performed a rescue from a window.

Three people were taken from the scene to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, although their conditions were not immediately known, according to the fire department. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.
