Fire Muster and Flea Market in Chicago

Today was the FIre Engine Rally  & Firematic Swap Meet co-sponsored by the 5-11 Club of Chicago & The Fire Buffs of Illinois at the Chicago Fire Academy. Several private collectors brought apparatus and several pieces of apparatus from the CFD were on hand for visitors. Several vendors had goods for sale and a special treat for many was a visit by an FDNY Seagrave engine that was en route to be delivered in New York City.

Another treat was seeing three engines used to supply water to the old CFD water tower as it flowed three master streams.

Tomorrow, photos from the event will be posted.

Daley appoints third-generation hero firefighter to lead department

Mayor Richard Daley today appointed fire department veteran Robert Hoff  as the city fire commissioner. said he hopes to continue the strong recent cross-training programs and level of professionalism for firefighters he said have made the Chicago Fire Department among the best-prepared in the country.

“In addition to his bravery, he is a great administrator and leader,” Daley said.

Hoff, the department’s first deputy commissioner since 2008, has been with the department for 33 years, Daley said at a City Hall news conference. Hoff is a third generation firefighter. He replaces John Brooks, who told city officials last month that he is retiring. The sudden notice came months after the city began looking into allegations that a sexual harassment complaint against Brooks was swept under the rug. Daley appointed Brooks in July 2008. He was the second African-American to lead the department.

Hoff has twice been awarded the Carter Harrison Award, the department’s highest honor for bravery. In 1992, he was given the award for rescuing elderly residents from burning buildings following a gas explosion. And in 1997, he saved four-year-old twin boys from an Englewood building fire.

He spent 21 days in a burn unit after suffering injuries in a 1984 fire.

Hoff said he was drawn to a job with the Chicago Fire Department after his father, Chicago Fire Department battalion chief Thomas Hoff, died in 1962 at age 44 in a building collapse.

“That’s all I ever wanted in my life was to be a firefighter,” Hoff said.

Hoff, 54, was the incident commander for the fire department’s deployment to New York City in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks, and to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, the mayor said.

CFD fire house new construction update

The following information comes from Bill Post regarding new fire houses in Chicago.

While most Chicago Fire Fans out there already know that the City of Chicago will be building a new Fire Station for Engine 109 ,Truck 32 , Ambulance 34 and Battalion 14 at 2343 S Kedzie within the next year or so, as it is the last of 9 new fire stations and one new Heliport that was part of Chicago’s “Neighborhoods Alive” building program that was proposed in the year 2000 and started with the building of Engine 63, Truck 16’s, Ambulance 89’s and EMS field officer 458’s new station which officially opened in late 2003/early 2004 , a tenth new fire station is now being proposed by the City at 3901 N S Wabash for Engine 16 and Ambulance 35.
It’s official and the Public Building Commission was supposed to have held a meeting in the “Grand Boulevard”
neighborhood in March to discuss the proposal. While I don’t know if funding has been approved for the project yet, once funding is approved it should take a total of about 30 months to have it built which includes about 9 months to complete the design, 6 months to prepare the site and another 15 months to complete the construction. So assuming that funding is secured and the project is on schedule ( which is not always the case) the station probably won’t be opened before sometime during 2013 (if we are lucky).
The proposed site is a vacant lot. That’s about all the information I have so far.
