Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from cbsnewschicago.com:

The St. Patrick’s Day parade is just over a month away and Thursday morning, parade organizers said who the Grand Marshals will be this year. This year’s honor will go to chaplain’s of the Chicago Police and Fire Department.

Father Bill McFarlane works with firefighters and their families, while Father Daniel Brandt ministers to police officers and their families.

Organizers felt their service was a perfect match for the big event that has small roots.

The parade will kicks off on Sunday, March 12 down Western Avenue from 103rd to 115th streets.

2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago with a Mayday alert, 2-4-23 (more)

Excerpt from abc7chicago.com:

A decades-old church that has spent generations in West Englewood is now just mounds of burned debris after a devastating fire tore through the church Saturday morning.

The fire quickly tore through the Universal Temple of Christ and Training School on Damen and 56th Street in West Englewood.

The battle to stop the fire became intense at times, forcing flames out the front and back doors.

Luckily, no one was inside when the flames broke out, however, a Chicago firefighter was hurt while battling the blaze. That firefighter was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

While Chicago fire officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the church’s Pastor believes this was an intentionally ignited inferno, happening just as the church was planning to expand.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Amid warnings that Chicago Fire Department paramedics are literally taking a beating at the hands of their patients, the Committee on Public Safety unanimously approved an ordinance at the behest of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2.

It would create a special category of crime for assaulting CFD paramedics, private ambulance workers, American Red Cross, or any other emergency medical services and disaster response personnel in Chicago. If convicted, an offender would face up to 180 days in jail and fines as high as $1,000.

A 10-1 for a police incident goes out on the radio band heard by every police officer in Chicago – but a 10-1 involving a paramedic or firefighter is handled very differently. A single police car responds.

With 1,700 police vacancies in the Chicago Police Department, paramedics increasingly find themselves on the scene without any backup during overnight hours.
