This from Eric Haak:
At 4:45 on Saturday (7/30), the Main Fire Alarm Office gave the 18th Battalion a working fire response to the 1500 block of south Kostner. Engine 38 boxed the fire shortly after arrival and reported they had an exposure problem and a burn victim. I arrived with just a little fire left in the attic so the pictures are mostly of rig placement. The first couple of images are of Engine 95 stretching a line to the second floor in the rear. You can see in the third image that there was fire blowing out a couple of windows at the very front of side B, although one of the windows is not visible through the bushes. The Still & Box was struck out in about 20 minutes.

This from Eric Haak:
Here are some images from a Still & Box Alarm in Chicago that came in shortly after 4:00 pm on Thursday (7/2). The structure was on the 500 block of South Millard and was a vacant “Red X” building. Battalion 13 reported he had a large volume of smoke coming from the second floor and was concerned about communication to the “D” side exposure which was a 3-story vacant. My images are from about 45 minutes in. Engine 38 was also pumping at Central Park and Congress and Tower Ladder 14 was working in sector “C”.

Images from Dave Fornell’s collection illustrating Chicago’s Ford C-Series Ward LaFrance engines.
The Ward/Ford canopy pumpers were delivered near the end of 1969. There were 10 units in the order and were the only WardLaFrance/Ford canopy pumpers delivered to the CFD. There were a number of non canopy Ward/Fords delivered, and quite a few of Pierce/Ford, E-One/Ford and even a set of Seagrave/Ford canopy pumpers supplied.
The WardLaFrance/Fords went to extremely busy companies, who beat the stuffing out of them. They all had rear compartment mounted winches and were built on Ford C-8000 chassis with 175′ wheelbases. Later E-One and Pierce rigs had 153′ wheelbases largely because the size of the canopy seating area was much smaller.
In those days, the yearly apparatus orders were distributed among politically connected vendors. So, when these were delivered, Schuster equipment was the designated vendor. Pierces (and Seagraves) came from Illinois FWD Truck and Equipment in Rosemont, owned by Ray Schuster, yes a brother to the owner of Schuster Equipment, and the later E-Ones from Able Fire and Safety.
The photos show the following:
The side view is of one of the rigs being acceptance tested on the lake near McCormick place.
Engine 19’s rig is shown right after delivery in front of its quarters.
As the years wore on, Engine 95 and Engine 61 are shown in front of quarters.
Note that Engine 95 was running with 150′ of 3″ supply line, 100′ of which was carried on top of the driver’s side compartments, and the rest in the hose bed. This was a precursor of the 150′ of 4″ line carried on the front bumpers of Chicago rigs today.
One photo shows this evoloution-not standard in the CFD at that time-in use at a junk yard fire on the West Side in the late 70s.
The photo of Engine 19, shown operating at a fire in 1977, with the three-compartment driver’s side body. The story goes that a well-heeled lawyer slammed into the rig and the resulting insurance settlement was enough to allow 3D Metals in Wisconsin to replace the original body.
All of the 1969 Ward/Fords had the same 2-compartments each side body. The later E-One, Seagrave and Pierce bodies had half/height compartments on top of the lower compartments.
These rigs were the last Ward/Ford rigs delivered to the CFD.

This from Drew Gresik:
Here are some shots from the Still & Box 1/12/15 in a Red X building @ #26 S Pulaski Road.
1/12/15- Around 1500 hours the 13th Battalion received a rundown for a working fire in a vacant Red-X structure at #26 S Pulaski. This 150×50, 2story ordinary, apartments over storefronts has been vacant for some years, and the structure was very suspect. As per Red-X protocol, crews stayed out of the building and dumped water from an exterior attack. Tower 14 and Snorkel Squad 2 worked elevated master streams. Four hand lines were stretched; two on Side A, one on Side C, and one on Side D. Engines 95, 38, 44, and 76 pumped at this fire. Companies on the Still & subsequent Working Fire were: E95 E38 T36 T48 BN13 BN12 (Safety) RIT BN14 T29 Sq 2 2-7-1 EMS 4-5-4 A23 A52. On the Still & Box: E44 E76 TL14 BN7 BN4 2-2-1 A10 4-6-6 4-6-8.

This from Steve Redick:
Yesterday, Madison and Karlov. Came in as a storefront fire, came to find out the building shared a common basement with some adjoining buildings. The 2-11 was basically for some extra truckmen. Really nothing to see from the outside. The rear of the fire building had a 1-story section with a bow string truss. A few shots from my quick walk around.Steve
