Arlington Heights firefighters were called to 2142 N Orchid Lane early Sunday evening (11/13/16) for a reported house fire. When companies arrived they had a fire on the second floor and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire. A broken water main and hoarder conditions hampered firefighters who were able to declare the fire under control in under 40 minutes.

Arlington Heights Fire Department Receives Top Rating of ISO Class 1
OCTOBER 5, 2016
The Arlington Heights Fire Department has received the Insurance Services Office (ISO) top rating of Class 1. ISO is the insurance industry’s leading source of information about property/casualty risk. In general, fire insurance premiums are lower for communities with top ISO ratings.
The ISO Class 1 rating has been achieved by less than 200 of 47,000 fire departments nationwide, 1/3 of 1%.
“ we are thrilled to receive this very prestigious rating,” said Fire Chief Ken Koeppen. “Our firefighters are dedicated, well-trained and committed to being the best.”
In addition to evaluating the fire department’s training, apparatus, and response capabilities, ISO also assesses water supply, dispatch operations, and fire prevention programs.
ISO’s assessment of Northwest Central Dispatch System’s capabilities also contributed to the Class 1 rating. NWCDS provides emergency dispatching services for the village from its communications center that is considered one of the best in the nation.
The ISO Class 1 rating is a confirmation of the Arlington Heights Fire Department’s dedication to its mission to protect lives and property, and to its motto, “Committed to Excellence.”

This from Larry Shapiro:
Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove units were sent to a reported pin-in crash at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Dundee Road after 10PM Friday night involving one car and an ambulance. The private ambulance was knocked on it’s side. There was a crew of three in the ambulance at the time with no patient. All three had self extricated prior to firefighters arriving, and the driver of the sedan was taken to the hospital.

This from Larry Shapiro:
A resident called the Buffalo Grove Fire Department for a fire in the attached garage around 2AM on Friday (5/6/16). Arlington Heights Engine 4 was the first to arrive as the address was very close to their station. They reported a full involved house and hit the garage with their deck gun before deploying a handline. Buffalo Grove Tower 25 arrived perhaps a minute later and deployed a second line. The bulk of the fire was knocked down within minutes as I arrived very shortly thereafter.
The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire after Engine 4 arrived, and then a Box Alarm was requested for additional manpower. The fire was kept from extending into the house.
The residents were outside when firefighters arrived.

This from Larry Shapiro:
Arlington Heights firefighters were notified of smoke coming from a house at 127 N. Evanston Avenue Thursday evening (3/17/16). First arriving units had smoke coming from the split-level house in a cul-de-sac, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire which brought additional Arlington Heights units plus a truck from Mount Prospect and an engine from Prospect Heights.
Companies were able to extinguish the attic fire by gaining access through a scuttle and had the fire out within 20 minutes.

Excerpts from CBSChicago.com:
Friday marked 30 years since one of the biggest fires in Chicago-area history.
The first call came in about a fire at the Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights around 1 a.m. on July 31, 1985.
Firefighter Chuck Kramer, who was off-duty, rushed to the scene. “I remember hearing the commander say he had a confirmed fire and told them, ‘What’s the most I can have?’ They said, ‘Five alarms.’ He said, ‘Start with that.’”
Seven hours later, some 200 firefighters were battling the blaze.
The massive structure built in 1927 had all kinds of hidden spaces that made it impossible to put it out.
“The fire was burning its way through these hidden spaces, above us, below us, around us. And we couldn’t stop it,” said Kramer.
At one point, the fire chief put in a call to Fort Sheridan. “He was trying to get ammunitions people out there to blow off the end of the building so we could actually make a firebreak and cut it,” Kramer said. But Pentagon permission would have come too late.
The fire just kept burning until there was nothing left.
Arlington Park owner Dick Duchossois was determined to rebuild and within a month, with crews working non-stop, enough was done to run the Arlington Million, renamed the Miracle Million, that summer.
The fully rebuilt racetrack opened four years later in 1989.

Excerpts from the Daily Herald:
[a] house was unoccupied when fire broke out before midnight on Thursday, authorities said. … the homeowner … returned to his house around 2 a.m. to see it up in flames.
Firefighters remained outside the house on the 800 block of North Kaspar Avenue throughout much of Friday, continually putting out hot spots as they flared up. By Friday night, firefighters said, fire operations ceased, and the building was torn down.
Without describing the contents, Arlington Heights Fire Department officials said a “high fire content load” inside the two-story, single-family home kept the fire burning long after the first firefighting crews arrived on scene about 11:45 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities said fire was coming through the roof and first- and second-floor windows when they arrived. But firefighters were unable to make entry into the house due to the excessive flames and heat.
The below-zero overnight temperatures also presented a challenge for [firefighters], who were unable to use the nearest hydrant because it was frozen. After accessing a working hydrant some 300 feet away, firefighters … were able to contain the blaze without it spreading to nearby houses, officials said.
