Before this alarm was struck out, it was elevated to a 3-11 and there was an EMS Plan I.

About 3 p.m. the alarm was raised to a 3-11 alarm, and added an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 mostly as a precaution, said fire spokesman Quention Curtis.

At least one firefighter was checked over because of the extreme heat, but there were no immediate reports of other injuries, he said.

The fire has affected at least two buildings, including one 3-story courtyard apartment building.

The Maywood Fire Department received a call around 9AM this morning from contractors renovating a four-story vacant building. Preliminary reports indicate an accident involving a torch from a worker near the cockloft of one building of this five-building complex. A 2nd alarm was requested from Maywood companies shortly after arrival and the fire was eventually elevated to a third alarm. The structure was brick with concrete floors and the fire ran the length of the attic space burning off much of the roof before it collapsed in sections.

CFD 3-11 on 3-5-11

After working the midnight shift in the CFD Fire Alarm Office, Steve Redick took off for the south side to photograph the 3-11 alarm fire in the 9100 block of South Stony Island Avenue. The fire began before 4AM in one room of a two-story motel that had a total of 62 rooms. The fire eventually resulted in damage to all rooms and burned the roof off before it was declared under control before 9AM. The Chicago Tribune reports that at least 7 people suffered injuries including one Chicago firefighter. Fire companies were busy citywide last night, and when this alarm came out, Engine 82 and Truck 42, the still alarm companies, were both tied up elsewhere. Engines 72 and 46 plus Truck 17 and Tower 34 were subsequently assigned to this fire on the still alarm.

Though he arrived late into the fire, Steve submitted several images that depict multiple hand lines, Squad 5’s Snorkel, and tower ladders 34 and 37.

3-11 in Schiller Park 1-27-11 update

The Chicago Tribune reports that a second victim has been recovered in the debris of last week’s fatal fire in Schiller Park at the Horse Shoe Inn.

Four days after the owner of a Schiller Park tavern was found beaten to death inside his burned-out business, authorities Monday found the body of a woman there, officials said.

Schiller Park police identified the woman as Wendy Bonder, 61, of Schiller Park. According to Mike Marrazzo of the Schiller Park Police Department, Bonder was a regular patron of the Horseshoe Inn, 9639 Irving Park Road, and may have been a part-time bartender.

Investigators discovered Bonder’s body Monday inside the charred shell of the tavern “after meticulously removing ceiling debris measuring three feet in thickness that fell during the extinguishing of the fire,” according to a news release.

Police believe Bonder died of blunt force trauma.

Bonder was found inside the charred shell of the tavern. She was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
