West Chicago FPD fire chief to retire

Excerpts from the Dailyherald.com:

A year after Patrick Tanner graduated from Warren High School in 1983, he was back at school,  as an 18-year-old, on-call Gurnee firefighter battling a December blaze that destroyed his alma mater.

A little more than 40 years later, Tanner will retire Jan. 10 as the fire chief at the West Chicago Fire Protection District (WEGO), a position held since November 2014. He spent 19 years as a full-time firefighter with the Highland Park Fire Department, passing his first test at 19 years old. He moved up the ladder as paramedic, lieutenant, deputy chief, and in 2010 was promoted to fire chief, where he served until joining West Chicago as fire chief.

In 2020, Tanner was the founding chief of the K9/Drone Search and Rescue Strike Team, which uses canine officers and drones to search for lost or missing people. Dispatched out of Northbrook, the Search and Rescue Strike Team has members in nine fire departments from Glenview to Tinley Park.

In another collaboration, the West Chicago Fire Protection District is part of the West Suburban Fire/Rescue Alliance, joining departments from Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glenside (Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn Countryside), Hanover Park, Roselle, Wheaton, and Winfield in serving more than 300,000 DuPage County residents.

Tanner also helped coordinate logistics for Illinois’ relief response around New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Deputy Chief Jeffery Keefe, who has been with the district since June 2002 ,will be sworn in as the new fire chief.

New fire chief for the Wauconda Fire District

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

#chicagoareafire.com; #WaucondaFD; #PatrickKane;

Patrick Kane

Wauconda Fire District Chief Patrick Kane, who started as a part-time firefighter in 1995, is retiring Jan. 20. He is a Marine Corps veteran, and was hired by the Wauconda Fire Department as a full-time firefighter/paramedic in 1999.  After the department merged into the fire district, he subsequently was promoted to lieutenant in 2009, battalion chief in 2016, and deputy chief in 2019.

He continued efforts already underway to implement the Mobile Integrated Healthcare program, which utilizes firefighter/paramedics to provide “pre-emergency” medical outreach. It is meant as a preemptive measure to provide patient service to avoid the unintentional misuse of the emergency medical system, according to the district. Wauconda and four other area departments partner with Northwest Community EMS System in the program, which is funded through grants from health and civic organizations, Lake County and area hospitals.

Curt Hanselman

Kane will be succeeded by Curt Hanselman, a deputy chief with the Arlington Heights Fire Department who was chosen from among 53 candidates and is the first chief hired from outside the department.

Hanselman has 30 years of experience and has been deputy chief in Arlington Heights since 2021. He has a bachelor of science degree in fire administration from Columbia Southern University and will complete a master’s in fire executive leaders this year. He holds the chief fire officer designation from the state and Center for Public Safety Excellence and has numerous state and national operational certifications.
