Excerpts from wsiltv.com:
Jon Roger Williams, 59, passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday after battling cancer. He is remembered by many in the area as he has worked as a firefighter with the West Frankfort Fire Department, a coal miner in southern Illinois, and a trauma/critical care nurse in area emergency departments, ICUs and Cath labs. He was also with Air Evac and was the Assistant Director for Surgical Services with SIH Memorial Hospital.
The West Frankfort Fire Department said, “Our department’s thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Jon Williams this morning. Jon served as a member of the West Frankfort Fire Department for a few years before continuing his education and moving into the nursing profession. Our relationship didn’t stop there though, as we continued to work closely with Jon on nearly a daily basis while he worked at Herrin ER and with Air Evac Lifeteam.”
Jon graduated from BCHS in 1982 and attended Rend Lake College and Southern Illinois University, finishing with a degree in Mining Engineering. He later changed careers and went to John A. Logan College to be a Registered Nurse.
“Jon had a big personality and an even bigger heart,” family members said. “He loved fiercely and once he made you one of his people, he would move mountains to care for and protect you.”
A casual gathering will take place at Rend Lake, North Sandusky Day Use area Shelter #3 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 28.

Excerpts from 25newsnow.com:
A 72-year-old man has died and two other people were injured during a house fire in Peoria.
A passerby alerted the fire station down the street around 6:55 a.m. that there was smoke coming from a house in the 3400 block of North Gale.
Both a firefighter and a neighbor sustained non-life-threatening injuries while trying to save the victim, and a dog was rushed off by animal control. The fire was put out within 10 minutes.
This is the first Peoria fire fatality in two years.
The damages are estimated at $40,000 and the house is reported a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
The Chicago police sent out a community alert about eight fires, many of which targeted Halloween decorations, that they believe may be the work of a possible serial arsonist. The alert mentioned eight fires between October 4 and October 16, all in the 19th Police District which includes the neighborhoods of Lincoln Square and North Center.
In each case, police said, the suspected arsonist set sidewalk autumn/Halloween displays and street corner garbage cans on fire. In the most recent three incidents, there have been fires using decorations on front porches.
A fire set early Monday morning on North Hoyne Street caused damage to the home but no injuries. At the time, the neighborhood was still decorated with scarecrows and hay bales left over from Apple Fest. Neighbors said those decorations were targeted three times in two nights.
Chicago police said the following incidents are included in their alert:
- 4600 block of N. Lincoln on October 4, 2023 at 1:50 a.m.
- 2100 block of W. Montrose October 4, 2023 at 3:48 a.m.
- 4500 block of N. Lincoln on October 4, 2023 at 4 a.m.
- 4600 block of N. Lincoln on October 7, 2023 at 4:13 a.m.
- 4000 block of N. Lincoln on October 9, 2023 at 2:58 a.m.
- 2100 block of W. Agatite on October 11, 2023 at 3:10 a.m.
- 2200 block of W. Roscoe on October 11, 2023 at 3:43 a.m.
- 3600 block of N. Hoyne on October 16, 2023 at 3:27 a.m.
Police described the suspected arsonist as a white man between the ages of 35 and 40, about 6 ft. tall with a slender build, balding with a beard and mustache. He was seen wearing glasses, a black jacket, blue jeans and carrying a messenger bag.
If you have information about the suspect or these fires, call Chicago police at 312-746-7618.
