Of interest … Safe Haven Baby Boxes

Excerpts from clickorlando.com:

Six months ago, someone dropped off a newborn baby in Florida’s only Safe Haven box located at Ocala Fire Rescue Station 1. Today, Baby Zoey is a happy and healthy little girl in large part thanks to the Safe Haven Baby Box and the firefighter who opened the box, who would become her adoptive father.

The firefighter stationed at Ocala Fire Rescue headquarters was checking on the climate-controlled box when the alarm went off and discovered the little girl inside with a shoelace tying off her umbilical cord. He and his wife had been trying to start a family for a decade, so after rushing the baby to the hospital, they began the adoption process. Today, they are Zoey’s adoptive parents and have fallen in love with the little girl.

Both adoptive parents said they commend Zoey’s birth mother for her decision.

Monica Kelsey, founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, was abandoned as an infant herself. She brought the baby box to Ocala in 2020 at the request of the mayor, she said, never knowing Zoey would find refuge there but expecting that some baby at some point would.

“We’ve had 10 [babies abandoned in boxes] this year in 2023, this is a record year for us,” Kelsey said. “But it’s working. And this little girl is proof that these boxes are needed in Florida.”

The box is installed in a wall where the public can access it from one side and firefighters are on the other side. The outer door locks from the outside when the door closes and immediately alerts personnel when a baby is placed inside. Zoey was getting medical attention in less than 2 minutes.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes is working on installing a second box in Florida near Gainesville and currently maintains 153 around the country, and will happily install one at any fire station or hospital if requested by a hospital owner or municipality and even has donors willing to pay for it. More information is available on the Safe Haven Baby Box website.

Florida’s Safe Haven law allows a newborn to be dropped off at any fire station or hospital within 7 days anonymously and without prosecution.

Commercial building fire in Prospect Heights, 6-20-23

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 20, 2023

PROSPECT HEIGHTS —Today, Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 12:37 p.m. the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District was dispatched to a reported fire at 1209 N. Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights.

Upon arrival, a significant amount of smoke was seen coming from the rear of the building. A closer look showed fire and heavy, dark smoke coming from the roof and interior. The building involved was a strip mall shopping center with 12 businesses. Several businesses adjacent to the area of the fire were filling with smoke.

All the businesses were evacuated and hoses were taken into the building to extinguish the fire. The fire rapidly spread in the ceiling and roof. Several water streams from aerial ladder trucks were used to control that spread until hoses could take over.

Due to the magnitude of the fire and potential for loss of property, the incident commander made a request for assistance using the mutual aid box alarm system – MABAS. This brought firefighters from more than a dozen other fire departments who assisted with the firefighting efforts.

No civilians were injured. One firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries that required medical care. The apartment complex to the rear of the building was never threatened by the fire.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished within one hour of arrival using several hose lines, four aerial apparatus water streams, and 26 fire apparatus. Firefighters spent more than three hours checking for hot spots and fire spread to ensure the fire was completely out.

All 12 businesses are displaced until hazards are resolved and repairs are made.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation

The Prospect Heights Fire Protections District reminds everyone to always have two ways to escape from their home or work place, to ensure smoke alarms are present and working, and to develop an emergency plan should their home or business be destroyed by a fire or other disaster.

Fire sprinklers save lives and property. Had this structure been equipped with fire sprinklers, the original fire may have been extinguished prior to the arrival of the fire department or at the worst, contained to the area where it had started.

Fire Service news

Excerpts from nbc5chicago.com:

After appointees of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took over Walt Disney World’s governing district earlier this year, its firefighters were among the few employees who publicly welcomed them with open arms.

But that warm relationship is in jeopardy as a new district administrator has reopened negotiations on a contract that was approved last month by the unionized firefighters, promising pay raises and more manpower.

A vote on the contract originally was targeted for last month during a meeting of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board of supervisors but it was never brought up, and it did not appear on an agenda released ahead of the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

Under the three-year contract proposal overwhelmingly approved by 200 firefighters and paramedics, annual starting pay for firefighters would increase to $65,000, up from $55,000. It also promised hiring up to three dozen firefighters and paramedics.

At several meetings since the DeSantis-appointed supervisors took their seats this spring, Jon Shirey, who leads the firefighters’ union, praised them for visiting firefighters at their stations around the 39 square-mile Disney World property.

The firefighters looked forward to collaborating with the new supervisors and administrator after years of clashing with their Disney-supporting predecessors, and viewed the appointments as “an opportunity for a fresh start,” he said.

The feeling was mutual, with board chairman Martin Garcia saying last month that the supervisors were working with the firefighters to resolve their issues. Even so, Garcia made clear that the firefighters weren’t the only district employees the board wanted to support.

But the delay in approving the contract has alienated the firefighters’ union, which last year endorsed the gubernatorial reelection campaign of DeSantis, who recently launched a campaign for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

The old contract expired four years ago and the firefighters declared an impasse last year when the district’s board was still controlled by Disney supporters. The Reedy Creek Professional Firefighters, Local 2117 have warned for years that they are understaffed, which poses a safety risk as the central Florida theme park resort grows bigger.

Last month, the district administrator who originally negotiated the new contract, was replaced by the board with a DeSantis ally who previously served as president and CEO of the Central Florida Urban League and will receive a $400,000 salary in his new job. The district also is paying the previous administrator to stay on as a special advisor.

A board spokesperson said negotiations with the union were continuing, without explaining why they were reopened with a contract already approved by the firefighters.

The district was created in 1967 when the governor signed legislation authorizing it to regulate land use, enforce building codes, treat wastewater, control drainage, maintain utilities and provide fire protection at Disney World.

Such private governments aren’t uncommon in fast-growing Florida, which has more than 600 community development districts that manage and pay for infrastructure in new communities.

thanks Rob

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Flames tore through a 154-year-old home in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood Thursday morning in the 600-block of North Central Avenue. Chicago fire officials said two people were inside the home at the time of the fire, but fortunately they were able to safely escape.

The home damaged by the fire is actually one of the oldest homes in Chicago and it’s a city landmark called the Seth P. Warner House, named after Warner, who was one of Chicago’s earliest settlers who was a blacksmith abolitionist and patron of the arts, according to the city. The home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Seth P. Warner home was actually constructed in 1869 and is considered very rare because it was built before the Great Chicago Fire, one of only 13 Chicago landmarks that carry that significance.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be checked out and is expected to be OK. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
