Two firefighters were injured and two people were rescued when an extra-alarm fire broke out in a Jewelers Row building in the Loop Wednesday morning. One firefighter suffered a minor leg injury and the other became overheated while battling the blaze in the Mallers Building at 5 S. Wabash. Fire officials said both were transported to a hospital. Two men were rescued by ladder after they were seen tapping on a window to get firefighters’ attention.
The fire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. and was raised to a 3-11 alarm around 3 a.m. It was under control by 3:30 a.m. The 21-story Mallers Building was built in 1912 and is filled with more than 100 shops specializing in the design, manufacture and repair of jewelry. It was renovated in 1993.
