A Chicago Fire Department lieutenant is facing charges after reportedly punching another firefighter in the face.

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Chicago fire Lt. Leonard Johnson, 53, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor battery after an argument with a 52-year-old male firefighter descended into a fistfight.

Around 8:30 a.m., Johnson and the firefighter were involved in a dispute at a fire station where they both work in the 1700 block of West 95th Street in the city’s Beverly neighborhood. The disagreement turned physical, and Johnson hit the man twice in the face. The man, who suffered a cut to the lip, was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition.

Johnson, who has worked for the fire department for about 20 years, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was treated for a cut to his knuckle. The incident is under investigation, though Johnson has not been suspended or placed on leave, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

With two new fire stations and a tax rate hike to operate them now approved by South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District voters, it might be a year before the first new station is ready to open, said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Rothecker.

When the second new station opens will depend on the construction management firm’s direction.

The fire district command staff is meeting weekly to start firming up plans and has started preliminary meetings with South Elgin’s development staff to get preliminary applications to the village.

There are two properties set for the new stations — one at 1090 Spring St. for the village’s central area and another on the 499 South Elgin Blvd. on the village’s east side. The third station, at 2055 McDonald Road, opened in 2000. Of the new stations, the east side station will be opened first.

The board will pick the construction firm that gives them the best timeline and cost outlines.  Once plans are finalized, construction could start late this summer, with the east side station ready to open in spring or early summer 2019. Depending on advice from their construction management firm, the second new station might not open until 2020.

Des Plaines Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Three members of a Des Plaines-area family were killed when their car was hit broadside while turning through an intersection. Two other people were injured in the crash shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday at Rand and Golf roads in Des Plaines, including a 16-year-old boy who was driving the family’s car. He is in critical condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victims as 20-year-old Amra Dilji and her parents, 48-year-old Edije Dilji and 57-year-old Serif Dilji, all of the 8900 block of North Parkside Drive in unincorporated Maine Township.

The family was in a Volkswagen Passat traveling northwest on Rand Road when the 16-year-old driver attempted to turn west on Golf Road. A man driving a Lexus southeast on Rand Road broadsided the passenger side of the family’s vehicle as it attempted to make the left turn during a green light. The collision caused the family’s vehicle to roll over once and hit a curb, moving about 25 yards.

The driver of the Lexus was injured in the crash but has been released from the hospital.

Des Plaines firefighters extricated the boy from the car and took him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and his condition was improving when police checked on him  Monday.

There is no indication of intoxication or impairment for either driver. Speed also does not appear to be a factor, though investigators are still gathering evidence. The speed limit in the area is 40 mph. Police have viewed footage from a red-light camera at the intersection.

Ambulance stolen from local hospital

Chicago FD Ambulance 30 after a crash

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

A 34-year-old man who was kicked out of St. Bernard Hospital stole an ambulance that was outside early Tuesday. He was waiting to be treated about 3:55 a.m. when he grew impatient and disruptive, prompting staff to eject him from the hospital. Just outside the man stole an ambulance and drove it for about a block when he crashed into a light pole and a street sign, mowing them down.

The man was taken into custody by police and taken back to St. Bernard Hospital for treatment.

The ambulance came to a stop with two flat tires near a guard rail for the Dan Ryan Expressway. Its front bumper was partially crushed and missing a headlight.
