Firefighters Battle Structure Fire on 1300 Block of East Chicago Avenue

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 12:34 PM on Friday, March 9th, 2018, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a resident on the 1300 block of East Chicago Rd. reporting a fire on the third floor, possibly in the roof. PSAP immediately dispatched a general alarm for the structure fire which brought a total of 3 engines, 2 ladder trucks, 1 heavy rescue squad, 2 ambulances, 1 incident commander and 1 safety officer to the scene (24 Personnel). The dispatch center also received notification from the alarm company advising a fire within the structure.

Truck 1 arrived on the scene within 3 minutes and identified a three story multi-family occupancy with fire showing from the roof. Truck 1 established incident command and a safety officer was assigned to oversee operations at the incident. A hose line was deployed to the third floor and roof of the structure while a primary search of the building was initiated. A ladder company was assigned to the roof to assist the fire attack crews and stop the progression of fire at the roof level. Due to the size of the structure and location of fire, the alarm was upgraded to a box alarm bringing additional Crews to the scene. The fire attack crew located and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes of arrival. Additional crews assisted with establishing a water supply, removing smoke by ventilating, removing occupants from the building and searching for any hidden fire. Salvage and overhaul activities were conducted to limit further damage to property and contents of the multi-family residential structure.

Additional assistance was provided by The Naperville Police Department, Naperville Electric Department (NED), Naperville Transportation, Engineering and Development group (NED) and NiCor. The building was declared safe for residents to return however one unit was determined to be uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage. Building management was assisting with the relocation of these individuals.

Naperville fire station coverage was provided by the Warrenville Fire Protection District, Bolingbrook Fire Department, Wheaton Fire Department, Downers Grove Fire Department and the Oswego Fire Protection District.

The Lisle Woodridge Fire Protection District and Downers Grove Fire Department assisted at the scene.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental by the Naperville Fire Investigation Team.
