Rosemont Public Safety Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Donald E. Stephens II, who served the village of Rosemont for more than 43 years, including as its public safety superintendent, died Saturday morning at the age of 63, after a lengthy illness.

Stephens, son of founding Rosemont Mayor Donald E. Stephens, began working for the village in 1971, and was instrumental in the opening of the Rosemont Horizon, now known as the Allstate Arena, as well as the village’s convention center and other municipal buildings and projects. Besides serving as public safety superintendent, he had a short stint as deputy mayor in the late 1980s under his father.

Stephens received the Rosemont Public Safety Department’s Life Saving Medal and Medal of Merit in 1979. He also was one of the charter members of the department’s K9 unit and served as a police dog handler for several years.

The third superintendent of public safety in the village’s history, Stephens retired in 2014, but remained active within the department as the chairman of the Police and Fire Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, son — and successor as superintendent — Donald E. Stephens III, son, Christopher, and daughter, Brittany. He is also survived by four grandchildren, his mother, two brothers and one sister. Village of Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens is his younger brother.

Services will be held Tuesday morning at Our Lady of Hope Church in Rosemont. Time is not yet determined.

Aurora Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Aurora Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Grove Street on Tuesday afternoon for a 21-year-old woman who was in labor. The medics who got there first quickly moved her to an ambulance. Firefighters soon arrived and helped medics as they began to transport the woman.

On their way to the hospital, the woman’s contractions became more frequent and they decided to pull the ambulance over to the side of the road for a safer delivery.  At about 1:43 p.m., the baby boy was born.

Paramedics assessed the new mother and child, then got back on the road and continued to the hospital.

Working fire in Lincolnshire, 8-14-16

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD responded to a fire at 840 Inverrary Lane at 4:30 Sunday morning (8/14/16). The first arriving unit was met by the homeowner that had evacuated the unit and reported flames on the lower level of the split-level unit. They encountered hoarder conditions and made their way downstairs where a ruptured water line that fed the washing machine was keeping the fire from expanding rapidly.

The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire which brought mutual aid companies from Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, Lake Zurich, and Wheeling, along with chief officers from Deerfield and Countryside. A Northbrook ambulance was later called to transport the homeowner to the hospital.
