Fred M: It’s to distinguish between different types of companies. Red – Truck, black – Engine, blue – Squad, etc… Before the 1980s when the old shields with the metallic number plates were still in use it was even better visible as the whole shields were made in the particular color of the company type.

Is there a particular meaning to different colors on the Company shields? I see one that’s red over white and another black over white.
