South Elgin FD modifies response protocols

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District is joining other area fire departments, dropping one if its four ambulances in favor of better protection for its residents, officials said.

Since May 4, the South Elgin fire department has been working with just three of its four ambulances to see if the idea worked for the fire department, explained Fire Chief Bill Sohn. Instead, one of the department’s engines was outfitted with the same life saving equipment as an ambulance. The end result, officials said, is better coverage for residents.

Cap. Mike Rothecker explained how having three ambulances and a fire engine with much of the same equipment actually provides better coverage.

Each of South Elgin’s two fire stations — one on McDonald Road and one in downtown South Elgin — has five firefighter/paramedics on duty at any time. Two of those are assigned to the ambulance, and three to an engine. If the ambulance is out on a call, those firefighters assigned to the engine would then take out the second ambulance. The same thing could be happening at both stations — leaving no one in the station for other calls.

Under the new plan, if an ambulance is out of the building and another ambulance call comes in, one of the other station’s ambulances will respond to the call. If there are enough calls coming in at one time, South Elgin would have three ambulances in the field and a fire engine with the same capabilities. However, patients are not transported to hospitals in the engine.

Mutual aid and automatic aid agreements with Elgin, Bartlett, Fox Valley and Tri-Cities bring ambulances into South Elgin if their  own personnel are busy.

About 68 percent of their calls for service comes from ambulance calls — an amount that is fairly common in the modern fire service.

thanks Dan

Something from north of the border … Green Bay, WI

This from Wayne Gauger – WGWI-PUBLICATIONS:

It was an exciting day for the Green Bay Metro Fire Department. The department received a new state-of-the-art fire boat. The fire department held a demonstration of the boat by placing a man into the Fox River as well as using a fire pump capable of discharging 2,000 gallons of water per minute. The boat will be used during rescue and firefighting operations. Fire chief David Litton says it will help the team when it comes to accidents on the water. I will tell you this potential always exists. Whether it’s a boat being stranded out in the bay, whether it’s somebody who capsizes their boat – an incident we had this summer – whether there’s a fire onboard or somebody overboard there’s much potential. The price tag of the boat was $315,000. $225,000.00 was donated by Green Bay Area Petroleum Companies and $90,000.00 will come from Green Bay taxpayers.

Evanston increases ambulance fees

Excerpts from Evanstonnow.com

Evanston aldermen gave final approval increasing charges to patients for ambulance service — the first increase in those rates since 2009.

The new fee schedule increases the minimum charge for an Evanston resident from $362 to $512. Higher rates are charged depending on the level of life support services required. The top fee for residents will rise from $621 to $771. Fees for non-residents are significantly higher.

Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says the new rates will still be lower than the average of the rates charged by other nearby communities, which range from a low of a $450 minimum charge for residents in Wilmette to $1,034.79 for any ambulance run in Glenview.

The city’s current rates are also lower than what Medicare is willing to pay for ambulance service, which means the city has been missing out on reimbursement for some service that many residents would have insurance to pay for.

Klaiber says the new rates are expected to generate an additional $200,000 annually in revenue to the city.

Fundraiser for Fox Lake Police Lt Charles Joseph Gliniewicz

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

When they heard about the shooting death of Fox Lake Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a Morton Grove police officer and firefighter said they had to do something to honor the slain officer and support his grieving family.

A pancake breakfast and raffle fundraiser held Saturday morning at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center, which was organized by Morton Grove police officer Nick Hoffman and firefighter John Abbetiello, generated $6,200 in proceeds, all of which will given to Gliniewicz’s family, said Paul Yaras, Morton Grove police commander.

In a week, Hoffman and Abbetiello gathered a slew of sponsors, both businesses and individuals to provide food, supplies, labor and whatever else was needed to make the breakfast and raffle a success.

“We’ve had a lot of help from the community,” Abbatiello said. Some of the biggest sponsors of the event included Catering by Michaels, Kappy’s Restaurant and Pancake House, CVS and Produce World, in addition to donations from community members, Yaras said.

Hoffman said he feared what those responsible for Gliniewicz’s death were capable of doing the same to someone else. Hoffman said Gliniewicz’s family is welcome to use the fundraiser proceeds “for anything they need financially.” But perhaps more importantly, he said, the event serves as a demonstration of support.

Carpentersville FD to celebrate centennial

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

In 1970, Steve Zaccard, who grew up in the village, joined the Carpentersville Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter at 18 years old. Throughout the years, he moved up to full-time firefighter, then lieutenant and then captain. He fought raging fires, chased criminals, delivered a baby. He became close with several other firefighters and would often go camping with them on their days off.

On Saturday, Zaccard will reunite with former co-workers — and meet current firefighters — at the Carpentersville Fire Department’s 100th anniversary. A parade starting 10 a.m. at Tamarac Drive and Maple Avenue will travel to Fire Station No. 91 at 213 Spring St. Richard C. Paul, Carpentersville’s first fire chief, is the grand marshal, Fire Chief John Skillman said.

At the fire station, an open house and barbecue is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Though officials have been able to track down several former full-time firefighters, Skillman said, they are still hoping to reach out to more, including any part-time or volunteer firefighters who worked in Carpentersville.

Additionally, activities for kids will be set up at the station, including a fire pole and a smoke trailer. Firefighters will give tours of the station, as well.

For Zaccard, the experience will be a chance to reminisce with some of his closest friends.
