This was the 3400 block of Adams…I made excellent time but it was all done in short order. Mainly some rig shots..but this sure was a big building. Squad 3 is the one used in the series Chicago Fire, running with squad 2 at this incident.Steve

The HME Saulsbury Squad actually has an interesting story behind it as it really only saw service as a regularly assigned first line rig for not more then 3 years at the most. It was purchased in 1996 under Fire Commissioner Ray Orozco as a single piece Squad. For some odd reason it was decided to have Squad 1 run as a single piece Heavy Rescue Squad and only have Squads 2 and 5 run as “Snorkel Squads”. Even though Squad 1 was downtown it still had quite a few runs on the West side, plus the near north and near south sides but anyhow that was the decision.
The HME Squad was delivered in late 1996 and put in service around early 1997, In the fall of 1998 it was involved in a major accident in November of 1998 and the cab was heavily damaged. The Fire Department had sent the Squad back HME in Michigan where they agreed to build and new cab for the Squad. As the Squad was at the factory for a good part of the year the Chicago Fire Department had modified a former 1978 model American La France 2000 gallon per minute pumper by removing the pumper and adding some cabinets to the rig and it became the temporary Squad 1. It wasn’t back in Chicago until the fall of 1999 so it was out of service about a year.
The Chicago Fire Department at the same time had made a decision to order the 3 pairs of 2 piece Squad/Snorkel apparatus of from HME/Central States for all 3 of Chicago’s City based Squad companies. They were put in service during the summer of 2000.
The HME/Saulsbury Squad wasn’t in service at Squad 1 for more then 2 and and a half years as after it came back from receiving a new cab it was back at Squad 1 for much less then a year. After June of 2000 the HME Saulsbury Squad was mainly used as a Spare Hazardous Materials Squad and of course a Spare Squad as well.

The TV series has purchased a heavy rescue from Antioch, IL because the cities fleet of squads always seems to be running the one on TV. Antioch’s squad is a spartan 3/D so it will look like the squad spartan/ Salisbury That was used in the beginning of the show

Actually, the series uses real CFD spares. They are lettered for the show, but are used actively by CFD. Not only is the reserve squad used, often “Truck 81” will be running as a spare for a CFD Truck Co.

Love the pics, especially the squad used in the Chicago Fire series, interesting to see a TV show vehicle running as an actual first line rig, not many fire departments around the globe can say they have something like this in the fleet.
