Chicago FD special duty – 10-25-13

Chicago firefighters responded to a call for help after 10PM to assist a woman trapped on the street. Apparently, as she was crossing the street, she got her foot caught in a gap that opened up in the pavement of a bridge. Her leg, beyond her knee, slipped into and became wedged in the space. Companies are cutting concrete to free her as 5-1-5 along with a truck company are on the street below helping to support her leg.

Tim Olk, was picking up from the 3-11 Alarm and went to the scene. He submitted a few quick shots before the extrication got underway.

Chicago FD 6-3-1 high expansion foam unit

This from Kyle Bernaciak:

I thought I'd share with you some pictures that I took of 6-3-1 (the high expansion foam unit) during a drill back in September. These shots really show the apparatus in action. This drill included Engine 26, Truck 7, Engine 103, and it was under the direction of Battalion 4.

The reason Engine 103 was involved in this drill is that if E26 or the truck are out, E103 is the next available company to operate this apparatus. It was told to me that Batt. 4 also would be drilling with other companies in the battalion to get everyone familiar with the apparatus.

6-3-1 is very useful, as you can see, in the case of fires that need to be "smothered." (i.e. basements, confined spaces, small storefronts, etc.)

4-Alarm house fire for Newport Township FPD 10-24-13

Newport Township firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire this morning in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The house sits well off the road and backs up almost directly to I-94 just past the toll booth.

Arriving companies were unable to spot the fire until they made the long driveway off of Mill Creek Road. They found a large, two-story home with a fire in the upper level. Since the area is without hydrants, the alarm was upgraded immediately to a Box Alarm, then to a 2nd Alarm shortly thereafter. One engine and a 75′ quint made it up the driveway and a relay operation was initiated from the street. Three portable tanks were used on the road as two engines supplied 5″ lines to the quint and the engine in the driveway.

As the fire overhead grew, companies had to pull out and resort to a defensive operation. Several hand lines and an aerial pipe were put into operation. Due to the water needs and the route tenders had to take to refill and return, the alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for additional tenders.

Willow Springs FD/Tri-State FPD update

This from Martin Nowak:

Drove by the former Willow Springs Fire house which is under Tri-State now. Took some pictures. Heres a picture of the Tri-State name on the building and two former Willow Springs suvs outside.  There was a Chevy pickup truck (what looked like a brush unit) but it is now gone. Also I attached a picture of one of the newer police units that has the same design as the Willow Springs Fire had.
