A man was hospitalized in serious-to-critical condition this morning after being rescued from a South Side apartment fire that officials said was caused by arson.
The 26-year-old man was about to jump from the burning third-floor apartment on the 5600 block of South Racine Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood when a ladder was used to rescue him, according to Chicago Fire Department officials.
The fire, which started before 7 a.m., was being investigated as suspicious.. Officials later said the fire began after someone ignited a flammable liquid that was poured on the stairwell, according to fire officials who ruled it arson.
After starting in the front stairwell of the residential building it soon became fully involved, officials said.
Officials said working smoke alarms woke up residents who managed to call 911, alerting the fire department early on to the fire.
At the same time, Chicago Fire Department [companies] were responding to another fire just over a mile away in the Englewood neighborhood, in the 6500 block of South Sangamon Avenue. One home there caught fire and it spread to a neighboring home, according to the fire department.
