Although out of our area … there is disturbing news this morning from Webster, NY:
Two firefighters were shot and killed and two others taken to a nearby hospital after a gunman opened fire on them as they responded to a house fire in Webster, N.Y., this morning, according to authorities and local media.
Officials at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., told ABCNews.com that two men were taken there this morning and were in “guarded condition” after suffering gunshots.
The NY Daily News has photos from the scene:
Fire crews were called to the scene on Lake Road just after 5:30 a.m. The shooting, however, forced officials to halt fighting the blaze, which spread to two other neighboring homes, Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn told reporters.
The sherrif’s office said fire crews were beginning to tackle the fire again before 10 a.m.
It wasn’t known what caused the initial inferno or if anyone was hurt inside the affected homes.
Webster resident Michael Damico told the Democrat and Chronicle that a SWAT team had responded to the area and evacuated parts of the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
“Some people on this bus already watched their houses burn,” Damico said. “They’re not happy.”
More from MSNBC.com with a video interview and video of the fire:

The Chicago Tribune has an article which outlines charges being filed against two women for child endangerment after a fire claims the lives of two young children:
Two women are facing child endangerment charges following the death of two children during a fire early Saturday in their West Englewood neigborhood home.
Tatiana Meakens, 23, and Britany Meakens, 22, both of the 6400 block of South Paulina Avenue, were both charged with two felony counts each of endangering a child causing their death and two misdemeanor counts each of endangering the life and health of a child, according to a statement from police News Affairs. They are expected to appear in court Monday on the charges.
Police said Tatiana Meakens is the mother of the two children who perished in the blaze. Her boy was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as 2-year-old Javaris Meakens, and her 3-year-old daughter as Jariyah Meakens.
When the blaze broke out at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday in their West Englewood home, Darnell, 7, and Marquis, 4, managed to run out a back door with the help of their aunt, they said.
Authorities said no adults were present to supervise the young children when the fire broke out.
The cause was also still under investigation, though officials said it appeared a hot plate, possibly being used to heat the room, fell onto some clothes, igniting the fire.
Firefighters arrived at the scene in the 6400 block of South Paulina Street to find flames shooting out of a bedroom and smoke throughout the first-floor apartment, said James Mungovan, the Deputy District Chief for District 5 with the Chicago Fire Department.
At first, firemen concentrated on getting water to the blaze, Mungovan said. Once the fire was extinguished, they learned the two children did not survive, he said.
“We got here in a timely matter. We got water on the fire and we made our searches which revealed two deceased people,” he said. “The fire had advanced to the stage where it was open free-burning.”

This from a Chicago Tribune article:
“We’re here when you need us,” Dempsey told [a] toddler, who had big brown eyes and closely cropped, dark brown hair. “We hope you go home soon.”
Julian was among dozens of children in Chicago hospitals who were given gifts by emergency responders throughout the day, said Rich Pinskey, a firefighter who helps organize the project for the 5th Battalion, 2nd District, Engine Companies 55 and 78, Truck 44 and Tower Ladder 21.
At the hospitals, the Chicago firefighters and their volunteers delivered hundreds of dolls, plastic trucks, bicycles, puzzles and other new toys. The emergency responders went room by room to visit the children who were strong enough to accept guests and to give them toys for the holidays.
“We’ve been doing this for 10 years,” Pinskey said, adding that it was tough enough for the children to be sick, let alone stuck in a hospital over the holidays. “It’s always nice to put a smile on a kid’s face. You get to see that twinkle in their eye.”
While toy drives and giveaways are common this time of year, this project gives the firefighters and paramedics a chance to serve children at the same hospitals they frequent on emergency calls, Pinskey said.
At Advocate Illinois Masonic on Friday, the firefighters started their day by dropping off several truckloads of toys. They stacked the colorful boxes under a Christmas tree in the lobby and eventually took them upstairs to the children.
Each child in the hospital’s pediatric unit and emergency room got several toys to keep, said Anna Zieba, the child-life specialist there. If the sick child had a sibling, they also were given gifts to take home, she said.
The rest of the toys will be stored at the hospital and distributed through the year as children rotate in and out of treatment.
This year, Nathan Maldonado, 7, asked Santa Claus to bring him a remote-controlled truck and an orange bicycle for Christmas, he said. Though confined to a hospital bed, he got everything on his list Friday.

The Northwest Herald has an article about a fire Thursday night in downtown McHenry:
A sports bar and residence both caught fire Thursday from power lines brought down by heavy winds during the first winter storm of the season, according to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.
Crews were called to Windy City Wings, 1266 N. Green St., at around 9 p.m. Thursday for a report of flames coming from the business, fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik said. Firefighters arrived to find sparks and flames comes from an arched utility pole and downed wires that fell on the front of the building.
“It was like a fireworks show,” Majercik said. “While ComEd was shutting off the power, the fire extended into the building. The high winds just fed the fire and made it hard to get under control.”
The fire quickly spread as crews focused on saving an adjoining business.
The blaze completely destroyed the bar and grill, but the adjoining business was saved, Majercik said.
