Dennis McGuire, Jr. took in a Still & Box Alarm last night. He submitted several images and a brief description:
Fire was thru the roof when Engine 121 arrived, appears to be some sort of explosion. The upper part of the 2nd floor exterior wall was blown out in Sector 4, and glass covered Western Ave. The building is a 2 Sty Brick Restaurant. The place is called Franconello’s.
A suspected gas leak sparked an explosion that ripped through an Italian eatery in the West Beverly neighborhood on the city’s South Side, officials said this morning.
No injuries were reported in the blaze at Franconello Italian Restaurant, 10220 S. Western Ave. The blaze was called in about 11:57 p.m. Sunday and was struck out by fire crews within 20 minutes authorities said.

The Chicago Tribune reports that:
A U.S. Postal worker at the Lyons post office made a shocking discovery Saturday morning.
In a broken envelope, Mark Thompson could see what looked like a half-stick of dynamite, a bullet and white powder under a stack of packages and other mail.
Lyons Fire officials said the suspicious package was found at the west suburban post office, 7836 W. Ogden Ave., about 8:11 a.m. and officials activated a hazardous materials response.
The post office was evacuated as officials from the Cook County Bomb Squad responded along with several fire departments, according to Lyons police officials.
Tim Olk went to the scene and submitted several images.

Bill Friedrich found the following from US Tanker:
US Tanker has just been awarded a contract to build a custom pumper for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. The Fermi Laboratory is part of the US Department of Energy and is one of the most important scientific laboratories in the world. This is a great honor for UST and we are very excited to build this new custom attack pumper. The chassis is a Spartan Metro Star with a 1500-GPM Waterous pump.

Firegeezer.com has an article entitled “Toy Fire truck Saves the House” about a man in New Athens (IL), 30 miles southeast of St Louis, who purchased a used engine and ended up putting it to work on a fire in a building on his property.
Schilling bought the 1987 Ford pumper equipped with a 750-gallon booster tank for $5,000 from the O’Fallon Fire Department in southern Illinois and before he drove it away, they showed him how to put the pump in gear and charge the line. Fortunately, as it turned out, he left the tank filled because he primarily wanted the truck to clean off heavy equipment at his hog farm and other chores, as well as having some fun with his grandkids.
But on Monday his whimsical purchase was repaid when fire was discovered in his son’s home also located on the farmland.
When the first units arrived from the Smithton Fire Protection District, they were surprised to see a pumper from O’Fallon, which is 20 miles away already on the scene.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr. photographed four new ARFFs at O’Hare and got a sneak peek at 9-2-4, the new mobile ventilation unit.
