Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:
Chicago aldermen and Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Wednesday paid tribute to retired Chicago Fire Department Lt. Dwain Williams, who was gunned down last month during a carjacking attempt in Morgan Park. Four people have been charged with his murder.
Lightfoot, who attended Williams’ funeral, said she was particularly moved by his nephew, who said that if the four young men who tried to steal Williams’ car had given him just five minutes, “he would have talked them out of the actions that they were taking that day,” and even offered to mentor them.
Williams’ eldest daughter, Tarmarcea Humphrey, said the family has started a charitable foundation in his honor, and that Williams’ family is praying not only for other families, but for the four young men now charged with his murder.

At 3:15 Saturday morning (1/23), companies in Chicago’s 14th Battalion were dispatched to 2213 West Cermak for the reported fire. Engine Company 23 landed a minute later and confirmed a working fire in the rear porches of a 30×70, three-story, ordinary, occupied apartment building. Companies worked for almost 20 minutes to contain the blaze but fire extension into the basement, first, and second floors forced a defensive attack at around 3:35. There was also fire extension into the adjoining “D” side exposure building that was quickly brought under control. Engine 109 worked their deck gun in sector “C” while Squad 1’s Snorkel was set up. Eventually, the fire was put out with several hand lines and master streams from the Snorkel and Tower Ladder 5. Companies worked for over four hours as the thermometer hovered around 10 degrees throughout the duration of the incident.

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
Chicago firefighters responded about 9:15 a.m.Thursday to a blaze that engulfed a two-story home in the 500 block of North Lawler Avenue. The fire was extinguished within 20 minute. A rear portion of the home collapsed while firefighters worked to extinguish flames.
Crews found a woman, dead in the home’s attic, and later uncovered a man dead on the second floor. Their names and autopsy results haven’t been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A man who survived the fire jumped from a second-story window and went to Stroger Hospital. He was in good condition with a leg injury.
Investigators had not determined a cause yet, but were looking into the fact that gas had been shut off to the building, and that the home may have been using electric heaters. The home had no working smoke detectors.
Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:
A 6-year-old boy died in a fire Wednesday night in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood. A neighbor noticed the blaze in the Far South Side row house in the 13000 block of South Evans Avenue about 9:45 p.m. and rescued four children before firefighters arrived. But the neighbor was unable to enter the second-floor bedroom where the fire started.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and searched the room’s top bunkbed, where they found the 6-year-old unresponsive. The 6-year-old was rushed from the home to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The fire appeared to begin in the bunkbed where the child was found. But it’s still unclear what caused the fire.
The boy’s four siblings — ages 1, 4, 5, and 13 — were uninjured, according to police, who said the children were left home without adults. The house had working smoke detectors.
State welfare officials are investigating the child’s death. They had prior contact with the boy’s family.

Firefighters put out the fire and found the woman unresponsive in her bed. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her cat and dog were found dead under her bed.
The fire was contained to her apartment.
