Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Gurnee has signed off on a five-year deal to provide emergency dispatching services to Zion, a move expected to be financially beneficial to both towns.
Dispatching consolidation has been occurring in several suburbs because of a 2015 state law dictating that a 911 operation cannot serve fewer than 25,000 residents. Compliance must occur by July 1.
Zion will pay Gurnee a prorated share of a first-year base fee of $875,000 starting July 1 for dispatching the city’s fire and police calls through April 30, 2018. The contact will run from May 1 through April 30 in each of the final four years and require payments to increase annually by 3.5 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less.
In addition, Zion must place roughly $160,000 it receives annually from taxpayers for emergency dispatching into a fund controlled by a new joint 911 board with Gurnee.
Zion officials said they expect six or seven of the city’s dispatchers will be hired by Gurnee.
Gurnee representatives presented their offer to the Zion 911 board in April. Officials said the village’s dispatching operation is ready to grow and take on more clients such as Zion, which acknowledged a poor financial situation and an inability to upgrade 911 operations.
Elsewhere in Lake County, Lake Zurich in April added Wauconda’s police and fire emergency calls to a 911 client roster that already had Hawthorn Woods, Island Lake, Kildeer and Tower Lakes on it.
thanks Ron

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
Zion firefighters arrived in the 2100 block of Hebron Avenue about 8 a.m. (Monday) and found flames blowing through a first-floor window, Zion Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Troy said.
They extinguished the blaze and found two kittens on the second floor during a search of the home.
“They were the tiniest little kittens, they must have been born recently,” he said.
Neighbors told firefighters nobody lived in the home, which will need to be completely rehabbed, Troy said. Adjacent units remained inhabitable, and the owner was on the scene talking to residents.
Tiffany Boose, 27, said a neighbor alerted her to the fire two units away.
“It was minor smoke at first, but by the time I got out of my home, it was thick black smoke and flames out the windows,” Boose said. “Once the firefighters made it here, they contained it very quickly.”
Nobody was injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Troy said.
thanks Dan

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
A Beach Park man who apparently ran out in front of an ambulance early Sunday morning is in serious condition at a Libertyville hospital.
The Lake County sheriff’s office said in a statement the pedestrian was in the area of Sheridan and Beach roads in Beach Park around 1:30 a.m. when he suddenly ran out in front of the northbound Zion Fire Department ambulance. Paramedics immediately attended to the patient.
The ambulance was on its way back from dropping off a patient at a hospital when the incident occurred. The preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian ran into the path of the ambulance that did not have its emergency lights and sirens activated.
No charges have been filed at this time pending toxicology results, said the sheriff’s report. The sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigation Unit is conducting the investigation.
thanks Dan

This from John Tobin:
ALF 1000 series restoration. Reportedly it was a brand new rig in the 1970s belonging to the South Chicago Heights, IL FD. In the mid 1990s the cab was purchased by the Zion, IL fire department and 3-D metals cut the roof off and made a closed cab out of an open cab on their AP. I decided it had too much potential to go to the melting pot and I finally cut just the front off, mounted it on wheels, new paint and a South Park bell and there you have it.If any ALF lover is interested in this please let me know. The Elgin logo can easily come off and a new department name can be re-applied.

This from Niko Stefani:
Here are some photos I took at Wadsworth’s 3RD Level Box yesterday . I was down the street with a friend when we saw the smoke. I didn’t have a radio on me to see what was going on. We drove down towards the smoke and saw the fire. Newport had just gotten on the scene with the first engine when I arrived. I got some photos of the apparatus and the house. There was a fire in the garage the previous night. Took too long to be a rekindle. This fire is now under investigation.
