Excerpts from the DailyChronicle.com:

Norm Mathisen smelled something funny while doing carpentry work Friday at the historic Charles O. Boynton House at 307 N. Main St. Then he looked outside and saw his van on fire.

The flames eventually spread from the carport where Mathisen’s van was parked to all three floors of the landmark Sycamore home. It took firefighters from a dozen local fire departments about three hours to put out the fire.

Mathisen, owner of DeKalb-based Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned to the home from his lunch break about 12:30 p.m. He said the fire still was contained to the van when he called 911.

Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner said a 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m., reporting a van on fire in the carport

Turner said that by the time firefighters were able to control the fire in the carport, flames also had spread throughout the house. Firefighters had to tear out walls and windows within the house to make sure the fire was completely out, he said.

The mansion, an 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style red brick home, was designed by George O. Garnsey, who built a similar property in DeKalb. The house remained in the family of Charles Boynton for a century. It was built in 1886 and 1887, costing $12,000, or $320,000 adjusting for inflation, and has been a stop on local house walk tours.

Sycamore firefighters were helped by several area departments, including DeKalb, Maple Park, Elburn, Kirkland, Hinckley, Sugar Grove, Burlington, Genoa-Kingston, and Cortland.

Sycamore Fire Department news

Excerpts from midweek news.com:

About 150 community members filled the Sycamore fire station Saturday morning to eat pancakes and to take a closer look at the newly restored 1923 Stutz fire engine.

The breakfast was a fundraiser to help find a permanent location to display the engine. Retired Fire Chief Gene Ege, who also is president of the Sycamore Fire Preservation Company, said the group recently completed the bodywork on the truck after it was dormant for several years.

“We formed in 2000 when we first got word that the fire truck was available from a collector to bring back to Sycamore,” Ege said. “It was the first motorized fire engine to pump water in Sycamore. The truck they had before this was a chemical truck – like a fire extinguisher on wheels. This was the first engine that would actually hook to a hydrant and pump water.”

It was in operation from 1923 to 1957.

“In 1966, it was sold at a public auction because they didn’t have room to keep it,” Ege said. “It went through three or four different collectors until 2000.”

A collector in Indiana contacted the city and gave Sycamore the opportunity to buy it

“It still had our name on the hood,” Ege said.

The group raised money and bought the truck in August 2001. Ege said that when 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina hit the country, the restoration efforts for the truck were put on hold.

“Money was needed elsewhere, but then three years ago we started fundraising again,” Ege said.

Ege said the entire cost of the project has been donor funded; no city money has been used. Marty and Sons Body Shop in Sycamore worked on the $25,000 restoration project for a year and a half.

Sycamore History Museum Executive Director Michelle Donahoe said the museum board and the preservation group are in discussions to find a permanent location to display the truck.

“It’s an important piece of Sycamore’s history, so we’re trying to be creative and come up with different ideas to get a permanent home for it,” Donahoe said. “We’re in the early stages, but I think it’s a good fit.”

Sycamore Fire Department news

Excerpts from Midweeknews.com:

The Sycamore Fire Department recently received a $1,000 grant from the Enbridge Safe Community Program for the purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus voice amplification equipment.

The equipment will enhance firefighter safety and survival on the fire ground as well as increase the safety and capability when first responders  firefighters serve as part of a required two-out group during interior structural firefighting or when they are designated as a Rapid Intervention Team on the active fire ground both in Sycamore and when called for mutual aid responses.

Launched in 2002 as the “Enbridge 9-11 Fund,” the Safe Community program has invested more than $5.7 million in North American public safety organizations, including police and sheriff departments, firefighters, and emergency medical services. The program helps underwrite equipment acquisitions or training that would help organizations better prepare to respond in the event of an emergency.

Sycamore Fire Department receives grant

Excerpts from the DailyChronicle.com:

The Sycamore Fire Department has been awarded new CPR equipment and a fire alarm system, thanks to funds from a federal grant and Homeland Security program.

City officials learned late last month that they would be awarded a $52,700 grant to buy two new CPR chest-compression devices that will be carried by each of the fire department’s front-line ambulances.

“The chest-compression devices will allow responding paramedics to effectively and continuously perform chest compressions during the resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients in the prehospital setting,” Fire Chief Peter Polarek said in the news release.

Ninety-five percent of the total estimated cost of the compression tools will be covered through the award. The city is responsible for paying 5 percent of the cost, or $2,600.

Sycamore Station No. 1 also will receive a new fire alarm system through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

Sycamore fire department receive federal grant

Excerpts from the DailyChronicle.com:

The Sycamore Fire Department has received a $35,620 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to purchase 16 new sets of protective clothing.

A news release states that U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced the grants this week for nine organizations including fire and emergency medical services across the state, totaling $866,923 between them.

The grant covers 95 percent of the estimated $37,400 price tag of the new gear, according to the release. The clothing it is replacing is more than 10 years old. National Fire Protection Standards state that protective clothing must be replaced when it reaches 10 years old, regardless of the clothing’s condition, Sycamore fire officials said.

The funding was provided by the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which has provided about $5.25 billion since 2001 in federal funding across the country to help organizations afford new equipment, personal protective equipment, training and vehicles, according to a news release.

Sycamore approves contract with firefighters

Excerpts from the Dailychronicle.com:

The Sycamore City Council on Monday approved a four-year contract with Sycamore’s 26-member firefighter union.

By a 6-0 vote the council approved the contract that includes a 2.25 percent pay raise this year and next, and a 2.5 percent increase in 2017 and 2018. The new contract, which will cost the city about $2.2 million each year until it expires in 2019, also includes a system that caps the number of firefighters that responds to shift recalls during the day at 11, a no-layoff clause, and a retirement health care funding plan.

Mayor Ken Mundy said the contract includes “a couple of nice features that encourages self-investment in the unit” for retirement.

“All of us need to do more than our pension, or whatever plan we’re working under through our employer, to be sure we have funds set aside for retirement,” Mundy said. “Both sides worked together in a real respectful and honorable way to come to some middle ground and some agreement on the four-year contract. We’re very pleased.”

The approved deal mirrors deals made earlier this year with the Sycamore’s two other unions – the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 133 and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3957.

“All three of our bargaining units have been very good about reasonable requests for increases through some tough years,” Mundy said.
