Oak Park Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

According to Oak Park Deputy Fire Chief Scott Bartelt, in 2015 the village adopted an ordinance that now requires fire sprinklers in new construction homes. Since then, approximately 15 to 20 homes in Oak Park have been fitted with a sprinkler system.

As part of a FEMA grant-funded program, the village of Oak Park recently hosted several real estate agents for an educational program on how to sell homes protected by fire sprinklers.

In order to showcase the safety benefits of sprinklers, a basket of newspaper was lit on fire inside a small trailer, which quickly spread to a curtain hanging on the wall. The fire spread around the small room and activated the fire sprinkler system, which fully extinguished the small blaze within minutes.

Village officials used the event as a way to highlight the life-safety benefits of fire sprinklers for potential homebuyers, who still may not be used to seeing them in residences.

Working fire in Oak Park, 11-3-15

This from Josh Boyajian:

The Main Fire Alarm Office (MFAO) sent the 18th Battalion to a still alarm at the corner of Rice and Austin around 7:30PM on Tuesday (11/3/15). About 30 seconds later, Oak Park was toned out for a structure fire at the same location, with the caller reporting smoke and fire from the 3rd floor of an apartment building. Battalion 18 arrived on scene and notified the MFAO he had a fire on the 3rd floor of a three-story apartment building on the Oak Park side of the street. Engine 96 arrived and lead out. Truck 29 was the first truck and they raised the main to the roof. They had a good fire on the 3rd floor. I arrived after the fire was knocked, but it was cool to see both departments working together at a fire. Here are some shots.

4-Alarm apartment building fire in Oak Park, 10-20-15 (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Oak Park apartment complex destroyed by a fire last week is too dangerous to investigate, officials say, and the building is being demolished.

According to a release from the village of Oak Park, the extent of the damage to the building in the 200 block of Washington Boulevard made it impossible to trace the fire’s origin.

Oak Park Deputy Fire Chief Peter Pilafas said investigators believe they know where the fire began, but identifying a cause wasn’t possible. “The origin of the fire appears to be in the rear of the structure,” Pilafas said. “There was too much damage to the structure to safely get in where the origin of the fire was.”

About 40 people were displaced when the fire began at approximately 9:30 p.m. Oct. 20. Firefighters from 11 area departments were able to extinguish most of the blaze more than six hours later. Crews remained on the scene days after the fire to monitor hot spots and flare-ups.

The building’s roof collapsed and much of the top floor was gutted. Authorities used two Pace buses to keep residents warm as crews battled the blaze.

According to the village, the building was likely constructed in the 1920s, and was deemed a total loss.

One firefighter was taken to Loyola University Medical Center with heat exhaustion, but was later released, according to a news release. None of the building’s residents were injured.

Gift card donations are being collected for the six District 97 families who were affected by the fire. Gift cards can be dropped off at Longfellow School, 715 S. Highland Ave., until Nov. 2. The items will be given to families on a regular basis, or as needed in the days ahead. Shoppers at Pete’s Fresh Market, 259 Lake St., can also provide cash donations at checkout lines through Oct. 31.

4-Alarm apartment building fire in Oak Park, 10-20-15 (more)

This from Code Photography:

Here are some photos and a video of the 4-Alarm apartment fire in Oak ParkTuesday night.
On 10-20-15 around 9:30PM Oak Park 620 pulled up on a 4-story apartment complex with fire blowing out the roof. 620 requested a box alarm shortly after. Companies initiated an interior attack but were having water issues and had to pull out due to the fire volume being greater than the water volume. 620 requested a 2nd alarm and started to put truck companies, aerials, and master streams to work. Oak Park 631 was positioned on side A, River Forest 219 was on the A/B corner, Cicero Truck 2 was on the C side, Berwyn 904 was on the D side, and Chicago truck 29 was on the A/D corner working with water flowing. Companies had exposure problems on the C side, the original building had fire on all four floors.
