CFD mayday at Still & Box 2-1-13 (pt2)

This from Steve Redick

Took in what I thought was just going to be a small job in the 5700 block of Newark, basically around the corner from Engine 119’s house. This wound up to be a mayday and 2-11 alarm. A large bungalow under rennovation, with fire reported to be on multiple floors. Operations were hampered by this fire ocurring in the midst of an ice and snow storm. Photos were near impossible to get, as the heavy snow ruined any flash photos, and the ambient light was not quite enough to get a decent shutter speed, so these photos are not anywhere near the usual quality I get. At any rate I was safely across the street watching routine operations when I heard some  hollering about someone fell into the basement. The DDC declared a mayday and there was quite a bit of commotion, but they had secured the injured guy very quickly. I found out later that the stairway from the first to 2nd floor collapsed..maybe due to the renovations taking place. I saw them remove 2 members from the scene on boards with collars, and a couple of walking wounded. All companies were ordered out of the building and a “par” was taken..a regroup took place and the job was completed. I really couldn’t determine much from my vantage point..maybe someone on the list who was at the fire could give us more info. The video is here:

Some photos are attached….I believe everyone is basically ok..I’m curious how this mayday went with all the new radios and channels…I think this may have been the first emergency since all the new radio stuff was implemented.

CFD 2-11 Mayday – 2 members injured

The Chicago Tribune just posted the following article:

Staff report6:06 p.m. CDT, November 2, 2012
Two firefighters were seriously injured in a 2-11 alarm fire on the South Side that also brought an Emergency Medical Services Plan response from fire officials this evening.

Firefighters on the scene called a Mayday response for a trapped firefighter, but the firefighter was located, and the response secured, with two firefighters injured and taken to area hospitals in serious-to-critical condition, Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Meg Ahlheim said.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5:15 p.m. for the fire on the 2300 block of West 50th Place. The building was a frame home, 2-1/2 stories tall and about 25 feet by 40 feet, Ahlheim said.
Four adults and four children were displaced by the house fire, she said.

The fire originally was in the attic when firefighters arrrived, and both firefighters were injured inside the building, said Ahlheim, who had no details about their injuries.

One firefighter was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment and the other was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, she said.

Chicago fire with Mayday 1-22-12 injures 2

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a fire that occurred on Saturday on the city’s south side at 7925 S. Colfax.

Two firefighters were injured during an extra-alarm fire that damaged three homes in the South Chicagoneighborhood early Sunday morning.

The fire department was notified of a fire on the 7900 block of South Colfax Avenue about 11:45 p.m., said Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a Chicago Fire Departmentspokesman.

… two firefighters briefly went unaccounted for.

“We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out. A couple members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11,” Flynn said.

The 2-11 alarm and mayday alert brought more firefighters and equipment to the scene.

The two missing firefighters were accounted for a few minutes later after the firefighters regrouped, Flynn said.

An Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was also called, bringing another five ambulances to the scene.

Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. went to the scene and submitted several images.
