The Chicago Fire Department responded to this fire in the 1900 Block of West Devon at 0330 on Sunday morning (2/15/15). It was eventually elevated to a still and box alarm and companies went defensive. What you can’t see in the images is that the building was a t-shape and had a fairly large extension off the back of the building. Police did rescue one resident who was transported to a local hospital. Temperatures were around zero degrees causing everything in the vicinity to ice over. I took the opportunity to take some images of a few engine companies I don’t often get to shoot.

Hi,

I stopped by the scene of the 3-11 on Sheffieldyesterday afternoon to take some photos of the ice covered ruins, and found a few rigs still working. Also added a photo of a tire stuck in a few inches of ice on a car parked across from the building.

Friday I decided to go the the demolition of the warehouse on 3757 S. Ashland Ave. I had the honor of meeting Larry and Tim. As you can see, the fire was still burning under the debris. Possibly the last in a series of posts about the 5-11 Alarm fire with 2 special alarms on Tuesday, January 22nd at 3757 S. Ashland Avenue, Larry Shapiro has uploaded a somewhat lengthy video chronicling early stages of demolition. The video was created on Friday, January 25th, three days after the fire. Much of the building was encased in ice which brought onlookers and photographers from throughout the Chicago area to the scene. Many images have been posted earlier,HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

The building reportedly has two basement levels that are inaccessible due to the interior collapse of the upper floors. Fire was still burning under the debris in many parts of the collapsed building. Fire companies were at the scene each day and most nights.

Tim Olk spent much of Friday at the site of the 5-11 ruins on south Ashland Avenue while the wrecking company began to tear down the front of the building. As the demolition removed sections of the wall, periodic flareups were seen as oxygen was introduced into the various void spaces where fire is still burning underneath the debris. Here are two images from last night just after 11PM.
