A suburban firefighter is recovering after he was robbed, shot, and nearly paralyzed in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood early Monday morning.

The 27-year-old firefighter and paramedic works out of a firehouse in Berwyn. Chicago police said he was shot in the face during a robbery in the 1800-block of West Erie Street. No one is in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

The firefighter is now out of the hospital, recovering at home, and anxious to get back in uniform. He has been working at the Berwyn Fire Department for two and a half years.

Family did not release the firefighter’s name to protect his privacy.

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

Berwyn firefighters and police responded to reports of a fire in the 3300-block of South Home Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Police say there was excessive smoke and fire coming out of the roof and windows.

After firefighters extinguished the blaze, officials say they discovered a body inside the house. The identity of the victim is not known.

Berwyn police and fire officials are still investigating the blaze.

Here are some photos of the Box Alarm for the house fire in Berwyn at 3310 S Home Ave. The fire started at approx. 11:45 hours. Companies arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the roof. The Box Alarm was initiated about 10 minutes into the incident. One victim was found deceased. Here are some shots of the Full Still Wednesday night in at 6615 W. Cermak Road in Berwyn. The initial fire call came in at approximately 19:00 Hours, and command quickly requested a Full Still. I arrived on scene just as overhaul was in progress. North Riverside Truck 806 and Forest Park Engine 401 were due to the scene along with Berwyn Chief 900, Quint 901, Engine 902, Engine 903, Truck 904, Ambulance 905, Chief 908, Chief 909, and Chief 916 with Stickney Engine 1203 due for the Change of Quarters.

Here are some shots of the Full Still in Berwyn, Thursday evening (3/23/17). Crews arrived on scene just after 20:45 hours and reported heavy smoke conditions. North Riverside Truck 806 and the third engine (Berwyn 902) were requested to the scene. No injuries to report.
