Prospect Heights Fire District history

From Chief Drew Smith:

Here are two photos of our old tanker.

It is the second tanker owned by the PHFD. This one was a 1968 Ford/Darley with a 750-GPM two-stage pump and 1,500-gallon water tank. In 1989 we sent it to Darley to have the pump rebuilt then to Monroe Truck to have a wet side 1,500-gallon tank installed. The rest of the 1989 refurb was done in-house and included paint, striping and lettering, and the installation of cross lays and new pump panel. It served from 1986 until 1994 when the 3,000-gallon/1,250-GPM Spartan/S&S tanker was placed in service. During it’s 21 years it had the radio signatures of “#6,” 174, and Tanker 9.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from Fox32chicago.com:

The men and women of the Chicago Fire Department remember the fallen each year on Memorial Day.

The 89th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Mass began with a march to the Church of the Holy Family in Little Italy. The fire department’s pipe and drum corps set the tone, as uniformed members walked to church, entering under the American flag, held by fire truck ladders.

Two firefighters who died in the line of duty in the last year were honored: 59-year-old Lt. Kevin Ward and 39-year-old Andrew Price. Two other firefighters died in the line of duty last April. Four deaths and four funerals in one year. One of the most tragic for the department.

They also honored eight active members and 125 retirees who passed.

Fire Commissioner Annette Nance Holt said the department’s ceremonial practices are meant to display duty, to let families know that their lost loved ones are never forgotten.

Some firefighters are also veterans, and their service to the city and country was highlighted this Memorial Day.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 in the news

Excerpts from wrex.com:

From May 19th to May 25th in 2024, National EMS Week is celebrated to honor EMTs and paramedics who respond to emergencies and perform life saving measure to members of the community. This is the 50th year that the U.S. is recognizing EMS Week.

Boone County Dist. #2 officially launched their ambulance service in August of 2023 after a referendum tax was passed, allowing them to bring on two ambulance units. To service their ambulances, they expanded and remodeled the EMS side of their building.

Right now, the department is staffed with 12 firefighters who are also cross trained to provide emergency medical services.

Along with the calls that are difficult, there are rewarding calls as well. They had three full CPR saves since August 2023.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 is ready to continue to serve the community with their new ambulance service, along with potentially expanding their fleet in the near future.
