Last I saw which was around October/November they had Engine 5 at Sta. 3 but they must just be rotating.

The former Spartan E7, the former Pierce Skyboom E1, and the former T2 Spartan-Pierrvelle have disappeared. Station 4 seems to have been emptied out, and they have a fire safety pub ed trailer in there. The rigs that were in there aren’t at Public Works or any of the firehouses. The former Dixmoor engine is at station 2, the tower ladder is nowhere to be seen. Engine 1 is still at 2, Engine 3 is at 1, and Engine 6 is at 3.

Thanks Tim! That’s very interesting and sad at the same time that it’s privatized in Harvey. I’ve been working in Harvey and the surrounding suburbs since 2000 and I don’t ever recall seeing a Harvey ambulance.

Tom, Harvey FD was one of the first if not the first fire department out south (I can’t remember) to offer paramedic services back then. Ingalls Hospital, in Harvey was and still is home of South Cook County EMS/Region 7. They do not have an ambulance service anymore they use Buds/Daleys EMS.

So I was looking at Harvey’s rigs at
https://www.illinoisfiretrucks.com/CHICAGO-METROPOLITAN-AREA-FDs/COOK-COUNTY-SOUTH/HARVEY-FIRE-DEPARTMENT
I see they had ambulances in the 70’s & 80’s. Does anyone know what level of service they provided with those? Did they just show up and provide emt-b services until the private ambulance showed up and transported? From what I recall, Daley’s ambulance was the private ambulance provider in that area of the south suburbs back then

Brain,
I don’t know currently what their state of operation is, that’s what was there 3 years ago when I visited but, I believe 1 of those rigs has been sold

John,
Do the rigs being stored at station 4 still work? Any reason to not sell them off?
#8 by John Keller on December 30, 2023 - 6:52 PM
As of Right now
35 uses Engine 3 and Responds from Station 1
36 uses Engine 1 and Responds from Station 2
37 uses Engine 5 and or Tower 2 and Responds from Station 3
The former Spartan E7, the former Pierce Skyboom E1, and the former T2 Spartan-Pierrvelle are at the abandoned Sta. 4

Harvey operates as 35, 36, and 37 on the radio as part of MABAS 24s numbering system. 35 is Station 1, 36 Station 2, and 37 Station 3. They also own 38 since they technically have a Station 4 that is currently abandoned. The company takes the station number, so when the tower is out of 37 it’s Tower 37, the engine at 35 is Engine 35, etc. They still number the rigs based on their old traditions though which is why the rundown has Engines 1-6. I don’t know how that system works for them.

Mike C. To add to your request about purchases it would be nice to see what they paid for them too. Not sure what the other companies are doing but the legacy guys are crushing it. They’re busting their butts and it’s showing.

Josh – The Weyauwega plant is mostly refurbing rigs that are crashed. They don’t do hardly any full refurbs. The mid mount you speak of, is that an Indianapolis truck?
On a different note, this page used to post periodically a list of the apparatus on order for area departments. I wouldn’t mind seeing a list sometime. I’m sure the list is quite extensive with the backlog.

Harvey currently only operates engines 35, 36, and 37 (unknown which ones they are from the list provided below). Occasionally their tower is in service. Thronton’s truck is the only truck due on their stills currently.

Their former Engine 7 was a 1998 Spartan, 312firephotos and illinoisfiretrucks have good photos of it.

Is this their first Spartan? I don’t recall what they had before the Pierce engines.

As for Refurb comments…..Pierce is still “refurbing” apparatus…..there is a long line to get in, but there is a major midwest fire department that has Pierce doing a full refurb on one of their mid-mount towers right now as I type this message. Their shop is in Weyauwega, WI
#17 by Mike C on December 29, 2023 - 7:18 AM
Rich – Refurb is pretty much not an option these days. All manufacturers are buried with new apparatus orders. Pierce closed its refurb shop in Appleton to focus on building new apparatus.
RPI and Emergency Vehicle Service Inc do some refurbs but there is no way they can keep up with demand. If refurbing a rig today was a viable option, departments would be doing it left and right during this season.
It’s really hard to justify the expense of a refurb when apparatus is so heavily corroded in this area too.

Craig, I’m sure Harvey is ordering only a pump, tank and six wheels …. No BS like all these departments put on these rigs today that will never get used. It’s absolutely ridiculous that a fire engine costs 800,000+ dollars . I wouldn’t pay that for apparatus just send the old rig in to get completely refurbed. Or don’t spec all the junk
#19 by Craig Mack on December 27, 2023 - 9:20 PM
“Lowest cost and the best quality” almost never go together. It’ll be interstate to see what they’ll get for $580k when most departments are paying double that nowadays.

They’re a Spartan dealer, so either a Spartan ERV or a Smeal. Regardless, it is much needed for Harvey’s extremely worn fleet of engines. On a side note, FAST has supplied numerous apparatus to Normal, Urbana and Champaign.

Good for Harvey! I wonder if this will be a Custom or Commerical. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
