Excerpts from NWIndianaBusiness.com:
The Gary/Chicago International Airport introduced a new rescue and firefighting truck as the result of $2 million in federal funding.
Fiscal Year 2022 Community Project Funding for the purchase was secured by Congressman Frank Mrvan (D-1st).
The 3,000-gallon fire truck will allow different types of planes to land and will allow for growth at the airport.
The funds also made possible the purchase of two high-speed runway brooms for snow removal. The truck cost $1.3 million and the booms were $932,000. The balance of the acquisitions came from 5% contributions from the Indiana Department of Transportation and the airport.
Most of the airport’s equipment is 20 years and older. The new equipment is expected to improve safety and decrease maintenance expenses.

At one time Gary airport had some sort of agreement with Chicago Dept. of Aviation. Currently, I believe ARFF at Gary is provided by a private contractor. It is possible the air freight carriers want the ARFF even if the FAA does not require it.
For those interested, ARFF at commercial airports (FAR Part 139) is determined by the average number of daily flights and the length of the aircraft.

To Mike C:
From the airport’s Wikipedia page, only cargo airlines currently fly to and from Gary, namely Aeronaves TSM, UPS, and AirNet Express. No passenger airlines have been flying in and out of there since Allegiant Air discontinued their flights to and from Gary in 2013. Private planes and military aircraft operate from that airport mostly.

Nice rig! I didn’t realize Gary even had enough air traffic to warrant a vehicle of this type.
Does anyone know if any airlines fly in/out of Gary these days?
