This from Larry Shapiro:
Shortly before noon today, Buffalo Grove companies were dispatched for a report of smoke coming from a basement window at 941 Pine Tree Circle South. Buffalo Grove Engine 26, freeing up from an EMS run reported a large header less than a minute later and upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire.
Companies arrived with flames through the roof, emanating from a second floor unit in the center of the six-unit townhouse. Engine 26 encountered extreme heat on the second floor landing after forcing entry into the unit. An interior attack was in progress when a partial collapse was reported and companies retreated and began a defensive, exterior attack from the front and rear. Heavy fire was pushing out of the rear of the unit that was along a small lake. The master stream from Tower 25 was put into operation for a period of time before companies went interior again.
The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional manpower and then a 2nd Alarm due to the hot day and extensive work required to extinguish the remaining hot spots. Many of the 2nd alarm companies were returned in short order.
There was some extension to the 2nd floor unit to the west and water damage to the unit directly below the fire unit. A firewall assisted firefighter’s efforts to keep the fire from moving into units on the east.
Companies at the scene from the Code 4 included most Buffalo Grove companies, engines from Wheeling, Prospect Heights, and Arlington Heights, a squad from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, a tower ladder from Elk Grove Village, ambulances from Long Grove and Arlington Heights, and Buffalo Grove MobileComm.
The Box Alarm brought a quint from Mundelein, engines from Highland Park, Deerfield-Bannockburn, and Grayslake. The the second alarm brought two aerials, two squads, and two more engines.
