Decatur Fire Department news

Excerpts from the Herald-Review.com:

On Monday, the doors of Fire Station 3, the oldest working station in Decatur, were closed as firefighters and their equipment were moved around the corner to the new Fire Station 6 in Fairview Plaza.

The building is nearly 100 years old, with additions being made throughout the years. The station was built in 1927, originally labeled Station 6. It was a mirror-image of another station on the corner of Clay and 22nd streets, which closed years ago. The day room, kitchen and training room were in one small room on the main level with a dorm room for sleeping located in the upstairs area.

The new station has modern facilities, with individual rooms for firefighters and more space for equipment and living areas.

For Deputy Chief Jim Ohl, the move is bittersweet. He spent more than 18 years of his career at the old station working with the same group of firefighters for nearly 10 years.

Plans for another new building, Station 7, are in the works at Chestnut and 36th streets. The fate of the old Station 3 is unknown at this time.

Of interest … Chicago police officers and firefighters help Make-A-Wish

Excerpts from wgntv.com:

The Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department teamed up with Make-A-Wish on Sunday to turn Navy Pier into a comic book adventure and help a boy play superhero for a day.

Nine-year-old Cyrus Powers from Portage Park has cystic fibrosis and  wished to become the superhero “Minds-Eye.”  His mission: to save Chicago from the evil “Dr. Laugh,” who freezes his victims and steals their valuables. Powers got to work, putting together a team to arrest Dr. Laugh and unfreeze his victims.

After the bust, Cyrus was presented with leadership awards as an honorary superhero police officer.

Cyrus also got another surprise: Navy Pier installed a giant version of his uniform’s insignia in the middle of the ferris wheel.

North of the border – Kenosha County, WI

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A Kenosha police dog that is being called a hero was welcomed home Sunday by an enthusiastic crowd after he took a bullet from a Chicago murder suspect last week.

The German Shepard K9, Riggs, was shot during a police confrontation with a man who allegedly killed two people in Chicago Thursday. Miraculously, he survived.

A procession from the animal hospital in Buffalo Grove, where Riggs was recovering, was welcomed by citizens, police officers, and the other K9s in Clausen Park Sunday.

Police said Thursday’s crime spree started when a 25-year-old man was shot and killed at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Then, just a block away, the same suspect allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. Police said the shooter stole Padilla’s car.

Chicago police tipped off Kenosha County deputies that a suspect driving the murder victim’s vehicle was at the Benson Corners gas station off of Highway 50 in Bristol. As deputies confronted him, the man ran off while holding a gun. That’s when Riggs leapt after the man and took him down as he was approaching the nearby highway. The man then shot Riggs once in the forehead. Riggs, who has spent five years on the force, is expected to recover. At least two deputies then fired on the suspect striking him in the abdomen and leg.
