Cary Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the northwestherald.com:

A wealthy couple who rescinded a $60,000 donation offer to the village of Cary after trustees refused to accept the gift without knowing their identities has taken their money elsewhere. The couple plans to donate $35,000 to the Cary Fire Protection District to buy a new defibrillator.

After meeting resistance in an 11th-hour attempt to work with The Community Foundation for McHenry County to reveal their identities to a divided village board in exchange for a yes vote supporting the donation, the donors walked away.

The couple continued working with the Community Foundation for McHenry County and decided to make a donation to the fire district, which had planned to pay for the defibrillator before the donors approached with an offer in October.

Although a check has not been delivered to the fire protection district, the $35,000 donation fell in line with the couple’s philanthropic philosophy.

Voters rejected three tax increase proposals

Excerpts from the rrstar.com:

Fire districts are looking at tight budgets and possible service cutbacks after voters rejected three tax increase proposals on Tuesday.

The North Park Fire Protection District asked voters to approve a property tax increase to pay for replacements for aging equipment — a $17,000 expense. The measure was rejected by 56 percent of voters. The increase, had it been approved, would have resulted in a $33.33 property tax increase over 12 months for a home valued at $100,000.

The defeat of the referendum means that North Park Fire may curtail fire assistance to ambulances on emergency calls. North Park Fire also may postpone a planned consolidation on a donated 2-acre site that’s more centrally located within the three districts it serves.

The New Milford Fire Protection District also asked for a property tax increase to pay for new equipment. The increase would have resulted in a $32 annual tax increase on a home valued at $100,000. It was rejected by nearly 61 percent of voters. New Milford’s fire operations haven’t seen a tax increase since the 1980s, and the budget has had to account for rising equipment costs.

The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District sought a tax increase to pay future pension costs. The measure would have resulted in a $1.72 annual property tax increase for the owner of a $100,000 home. It was rejected by 57 percent of the voters.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

A mayday alert was issued after a vacant apartment in the Gresham neighborhood went up in flames Friday morning, temporarily entrapping a Chicago firefighter and multiple squatters.

At 3:15 a.m., an abandoned duplex in the 7800 block of South Sangamon caught on fire after two women lit candles inside. The women, 38 and 41 years old, woke up to the apartment ablaze on its north side.

The mayday was declared when the second floor pancaked onto the first with the fire still ongoing. Firefighters were working on the second floor during the collapse, which trapped one in debris for about a minute, but he escaped with no injuries.

The two women were taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital for smoke inhalation. One had been taking up shelter inside the now-collapsed duplex, while the other lived next door. A 66-year-old man who resided in the vacant building was also displaced by the blaze, but he had left the residence prior to firefighters’ arrival.

No one was in custody early Friday as CFD investigated the fire.
