After reviewing the run down of the companies at the 5 and 2 special alarms at 848 McIntosh Ct in Prospect Heights, I noticed that there were some companies located relatively close to the fire that didn’t go.
The first glaring example is Wheeling Tower Ladder 24 who was actually located closer to the scene of the fire then Prospect Heights Tower Ladder 9, the first due truck. Not only didn’t they respond on the Code 3 or the Code 4, they didn’t respond at all. Were they out of service or were they deliberately held back from responding to keep Wheeling covered?
Another glaring example of fire companies that didn’t respond were any companies from the Northbrook Fire Department which included Northbrook Tower Ladder 12.
In regards to Buffalo Grove, Quint 25 was dispatched and it appears in many photos and in at least one video clip.
Was the quint running as a spare rig for Tower Ladder 25 or is Quint 25 a new unit? Previously Buffalo Grove Station 25 was running with Tower Ladder 25, Ambulance 25, and Utility (EMS Squad 25) when enough people were on duty. Reserve Tower 25 was also housed there.
The quint was former Quint 27, a 2003 KME. I would assume that it was acting as a spare for Tower Ladder 25? If not, is it a jump company or was Tower Ladder 25 relocated? A few years ago they were talking about moving Tower Ladder 25 to Station 26 however they decided to keep it at Station 25.

Wheeling Tower 24 and Mount Prospect Tower 13 were both out of service for maintenance or repair that day. Northbrook’s tower was due on the old Code 4 but since RED went to the CAD last fall, it somehow was skipped with things switched over to the paper box cards.
Much, much more to come on this fire.

Void space fires are a real bitch… and the larger the building, the more of a bear it is. never enough early manpower to get ahead of it and pull ceiling, open roofs, stretch lines all at the same time.
