Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:
Thirty Harvey police officers and firefighters got their final paychecks on Friday after losing their jobs to layoffs. The layoffs of 18 firefighters and 13 police officers came after a court ordered pension payment Harvey can’t afford to make.
The people of Harvey have already been worried about their city’s financial crisis. Now they’re worried about their own safety.
The attorney for the police and firefighter unions said in the worst case of municipal management he’s ever seen, the city hasn’t been funding those pensions properly or at all in the past 10 years.
In Springfield this week, new legislation was proposed that would consolidate municipal fire and police pension funds, as well as create some oversight for those investments.

All that money that went “missing” under Kellogg could have saved these jobs. They were federally investigated and have no idea where the money went. Start taking garnishments from Kellogg’s pocket and see how quick this mess gets fixed.

I have some questions out of curiosity and am not trying to start an argument about pensions…
The blurb from the cbslocal article mentions new legislation to consolidate police and fire pensions, is there currently no statewide plan for these occupations or is it that left to local government entities to set-up and maintain?
What happens if say a firefighter starts a career in “city A” and after awhile gets a job in “city B”, how is their time calculated?

Put all Fire and Police back to work. Take all the money from tickets and fines and use that to boost the pension fund.Cut pay and benefit packages to village elected officials and village administrator.

That is sad and very disgusting.
But then again, the people of a city are responsible for whom they elect so perhaps not paying the slightest attention to such matters and not holding public officials accountable.
Thank You to everybody everywhere who works in fire/ems and police for your service. That’s the very least we can do other than to apologize for the turds that are elected.
We let you down and you deserved much better.
