This from Wayne Stuart for #throwbackthursday:
The Gary Fire Department operated this 1977 Ward LaFrance pumper. It carried WLF serial # 80-1400. It had a 1500-GPM pump and a 500-gallon tank. It was originally assigned to Engine Company #1. However as with most Gary apparatus it served in many different companies during it’s career. It was also one of only two lime green apparatus operated by the GFD.

Besides “Emergency”, a Ward LaFrance was also used as “CFD Engine 17”, the featured engine in the movie “Backdraft”. While CFD ran a few WLF engines during that period, I don’t think they were all that popular within their fleet. I believe there were only 4 that looked like “17” with the hard suction on the roof. Was Ron Howard trying make a connection with “Emergency” ??? After all, “Chicago Fire” has an “Engine 51″…and “Third Watch” had a firehouse dog named “Mantooth”.

No mistaken a WARD and you don’t see many now.
Perhaps the most exposed apparatus thanks to the TV program EMERGENCY.
