Libertyville firefighters and surrounding departments responded to a barn fire at 14060 Old School Road in Mettawa Monday afternoon (1/9/18). Countryside Chief 4100 was the first to arrive and confirmed a working fire. Companies tapped into a hydrant across the street and were able to save the exposures, but the barn was destroyed. It was reportedly a four-stall barn and the horses were able to escape though some smaller animals perished in the blaze. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for change of quarters and the full box assignment was filled out later.
Companies at the scene included two engines, a quint, an ambulance and battalion chief from Libertyville; engines from Countryside, Knollwood, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Gurnee, and Wauconda; a Lincolnshire-Riverwoods squad; and chiefs from Countryside, Lake Forest, Mundelein, and Libertyville.

Thanks, now why would you say the Great Lakes seems to be the only Fire Department in Lake County to have 4 man companies?

Waukegan stations 2 and 5 have 3 person jump companies that crossman an engine and ambulance. Station 5 also has an ARFF they man too.

Which ones in Waukegan are jump companies? I also know that Great Lakes runs 4 man companies.

No idea why they’re all undermanned. Some are staffed ok. Waukegan has 2 firehouses out of their 5 that are still jump companies, gurnee and countryside staff ok but their 3rd ambulance crossmans their tower ladder. Most of lake county is either running jump companies or 2 man fire companies. For what people pay in taxes it’s really sad.

How come allot of fire departments in Lake county are undermanned? Would you say any Lake Count Departments are properly manned?

Libertyville is set up like this.
Station 1 has 3 plus a shift commander and the 3 jump between the engine, tower and ambulance. Station 2 has 3 and jump between the ambulance and engine and a heavy rescue and station 3 has 3 guys jumping between the quint, the tender and an ambulance. Just like most lake county departments. Lots of equipment and no people.

Bill, I was told that they moved the quint to station 3 to be closer to the industrial district it has. The new tender is also at station 3, and runs all the Tollway and non hydrant areas. Between the quint and tender it is a jump company and they also have the ambulance there. This is all according to a Libertyville FF. Station 1 is the same and station 2 now has an engine which used to be at station 3.
