Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Faced with ever-increasing calls for service, the Lombard Fire Department now will staff a third ambulance every day round-the-clock.
Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Howell said the department responded to 6,699 ambulance calls last year and a couple hundred of those had to be answered by crews from neighboring communities because Lombard’s were busy elsewhere. He said he expects the number of calls to increase again this year for a variety of reasons.
Howell said the department acquired its third ambulance in September, but only recently received funding from the village board to staff it round-the-clock like its two other ambulances.
The department also can use engines to provide medical aid because they carry the same ALS equipment and medications as the ambulances, but only ambulances can transport patients to the hospital.
Every Lombard firefighter is a state-certified paramedic.
thanks Ron

cmk420, I live in Lombard and this has been the set-up since the number change. Medics 44 (south) & 45 (north), medic 47 (3rd if staffed) at Sta. 45 and medic 46 (spare) at Sta. 44. MABAS 21, Engine 47 is still there. I would think that the ex. Eng-45 is now Eng-47, since 47 is the spare rig.

I live in Lombard. This has been the set-up since the number change, Medic 45 (northside), Medic 44 (southside), Medic 47 (3rd if staffed) at Sta. 45. Then Medic 46 (spare) at Sta. 44.

Five total ambulances–wow!! So, now I am curious as to how they are numbered, according to the current DuComm standards.

I know the front lines are 44, 45 & 47. Reserve might be 46 & not sure of the spare.
Did Lombard keep Engine 47 (ex Engine 43) and what became of the ex Engine 45, 2007 Pierce Dash?

Prior to the current contract going into effect over the summer, the 3rd ambo was only manned with manning allowed. Minimum manning prior to this contract was 15, it is now 16, which allows the 3rd ambo to be staffed daily. There are 3 frontline medics (2 at Station 45(north) and 1 at Station 44), with one stocked 1 ALS reserve (Station 44). There is also a BLS spare at Station 45. Lombard really needs a 3rd station and a 4th ambulance to keep up with the call, but that is another matter…

Previously, was this third ambulance only in service during a certain portion of the day?
How many ambulances (frontline and reserve) does Lombard now have?
I am guessing this ambulance is at the downtown station?
Good move by Lombard to react to the ever-charging landscape of the fire/EMS service.
