Four injured during apartment fire in Chicago, 4-15-16

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Jessica Johnson woke to the sounds of screaming but thought it was just a Cubs fan straggling home late from Wrigley Field six blocks away. She went to the window anyway. “He was yelling, ‘Get out. Get out. Get out,’ ” said Johnson, who dressed, grabbed her keys and ran outside barefoot.

“Once in the front, I saw flames shooting out of the side of the building,” she said. The man she heard yelling was on the sidewalk, bleeding.  Neighbors were running outside and calling 911.

Two people inside the three-story apartment building in the 3400 block of North Janssen Avenue in Lakeview jumped to safety and two others were rescued by firefighters, according to Deputy District Fire Chief John Shehan.  All four were taken to hospitals in serious-to-critical condition.

The fire started about 1:50 a.m. in a rear apartment on the third floor of the six-unit building, Shehan said at the scene. The fire department was initially called to an address in the 3400 block of North Southport Avenue, a block east.  Firefighters lost a minute or two while searching for the building that was on fire until they got a second call with the right address.

“A minute or two (can make) a big difference,” Shehan said. “There was a lot of fire venting from the apartment.”

A 22-year-old man and a woman, whose age was not available, were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.  A 35-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. The police Bomb and Arson Unit was inspecting the site as part of standard procedure.

A request for assistance …

This from a reader:

Re: House Bill Still Pending Since Feb 2016
Today we must come together and support this effort to name the I355 /I290 interchange after this same state Trooper that was killed in the line of duty.
I met and knew John who was one tough and dedicated Trooper. Let’s secure both sides of the Isle downstate and gather the much needed support to include the governor’s signature.
Rep. Christine – Do we know why this Bill is still sitting in idle ?

Several injured during Kankakee fire, 4-13-16 (more)

2-Alarm fire with a 3-Alarm EMS Box for apartments over commercial fire with rescues at 894 W. Station St. (radio traffic is a condensed timeline) from radioman911.com – Audio by Broadcastify

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

Two brothers, ages 2 and 4, were critically injured in an apartment fire in Kankakee. Their 55-year-old grandmother, a 22-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and a firefighter were also hurt. Investigators are trying to pinpoint what caused the three-alarm fire. They said it started in a rear stairwell, blocking some escape routes. Firefighters had to make several rescues.

Justice Ward, 4, and Ju’shaun Ward, 2, are struggling to survive. They were airlifted to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center. They were both trapped inside a second-floor apartment as it burned. The boys’ mother and seven of their siblings, including an infant, made it out safely. Their grandmother suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Riverside Hospital in Kankakee. She told a relative, Harold Williams, about those frightening moments.

“Kids was hollerin’ and screamin’ because, you know, they didn’t know where they was. So they had to feel through the smoke to try to get them out of there. So luckily the fire department came and kind of saved their lives,” Williams said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. The building, located in the 800-block of West Station Street, has two businesses on the first floor, eight apartments on the second floor and 22 residents.

“Upon our arrival, we had heavy smoke from the second story with numerous victims from numerous windows on the second floor,” Kankakee Fire Chief Ron Young said.

The 25-year-old man jumped from a window. He was rushed to Riverside, where he’s being treated for burns and a fracture. The 22-year-old woman was also taken to Riverside for burns. A firefighter had minor burns on his face. He was treated at the scene.

“All of the doorways to the apartments fed into a single hallway, so they couldn’t go out the front door to get out. That’s why they went out windows,” said Chief Ron Young, Kankakee Fire Department. “I’m proud of my people. I am proud of their professionalism and their courage.”
