Drew, do you remember when PR used a firefighter as the animal control person while on duty?
#2 by Drew Smith on December 19, 2013 - 3:27 PM
PR ran E36 with 3 and had one on T36. They decided a single 4-man quint was a better option.

If E36 is OOS, will that rig be given to E35 since they are running with an older rig?
#4 by sebastian on December 18, 2013 - 5:57 PM
why would park ridge take e 36 oos??? seems odd!! so is it to say that the e 36 will no longer exist??

Drew & Bill thank you for the info. I was not aware.

FFPM571, I am by no means professing to be an “Expert”. I am simply expressing my thoughts and common sense. Obviously you have taken personal offense to my comments and concerns. Regarding your comment that you are wasting taxpayers dollars, that does not make any sense.

There will no longer be a tower ladder, just the 105′ stick at 1 and the 77′ at 4. As of right now station 1 is still a jump company out of the seagrave. Once the new truck comes in service station 1 will not jump anymore and old engine 2(the Ferrera) will go into reserve. Of course, this could all change but that’s the latest info.

OK TB your the ” Expert” Better go get the BGA… Oh and I am wasting taxpayer dollars right now typing this… add me to the list..

Park Ridge took E36 OOS and runs four on the tower.

Thanks for the info, Lucas. What’s the status of Engine 1? Are they still running with the 1989 Seagrave? If engine 2 gets the new Pierce will they hand down their current Ferrera to engine 1? Are you saying that Bolingbrook will no longer have a tower ladder? A straight stick at station 1 with the engine and their current 77 foot quint at station 4? Thanks again for the info, really appreciate it.

In regards to the Bolingbrook quint it will be replacing Truck 1 out of Station 1(the Grumman Aerialcat). It’s going to be a 105′ stick and we also purchased a new Engine from Pierce at the same time as this truck, it should be the same(or very similar) to Engine 5 that was placed in service last year. Not sure what rig that is replacing, possibly Engine 2.

FFPM571, the Chief there is either clueless or a complete puppet. He got what he paid for! As a matter of fact, I do know how the Village of Niles operates. The bottom line here is, you don’t just buy a piece of equipment to buy. Red Tape? That is B.S.! I know that it takes a collaborative effort to buy a piece of equipment in any department; Fleet Services, Village Board, Village Manager, Fire Department, etc… If Niles is that messed up, the BGA should be notified because, Niles just waisted $310,000.00 in taxpayers dollars. If there are other towns you know of that have crapped money away, don’t have bidding processes in writing or are playing games thinking they won’t be caught, let me know. The Niles Fire Chief should be mortified and ashamed of his actions and decisions!!!!

Scott I had thought that Engine 36 was taken out of service or at least had in effect become a “Jump company” so it if a structure fire was reported in Park Ridge most if not all of Station 36’s crew would ride on the Truck, however the Ambulance would keep it’s crew but still go to the fire. I know that Park Ridge Tower 36 is due on some MABAS extra alarms further east in Division 3 like to Skokie and Evanston. Did they change that and now most of the men ride the Engine and only one or two on the Truck?
#14 by Scott on December 16, 2013 - 9:07 PM
Bill, Park Ridge only runs 1 and if lucky 2 on their truck. Niles always staff’s their truck.
T.B. As far as Fleet in Niles buying the Tower/Truck, obviously you don’t know how the politics work in Niles. Not knocking that Dept or Government, but there are many towns that have quite abit more red-tape than just a Chief & the Dept. buying apparatus.
#15 by FFPM571 on December 16, 2013 - 7:34 PM
TB. I know for a fact that is how it went down. The Chief told the Fleet manager to find a replacement truck. The Village didn’t want to spend alot so that is what they got. They wanted a heavy duty Pierce rear mount ladder with a pump. That’s what they bought a $250K POS with 100K on the odometer and had to put another $60K in repairs on top of that to get it in service. I heard the same story from 2 sources at the Village garage.

Wow! The fleet manager has the approval to purchase fire apparatus without the Chiefs approval????? I highly doubt that. If that is the case, Niles has some major issues. I do know some fleet managers are very knowledgeable and make recommendations for the apparatus specifications but, I find it hard to believe the Fire Chief had no clue or say in this purchase.
#17 by FFPM571 on December 16, 2013 - 3:44 PM
The Chief didn’t buy the used truck.. The fleet manager bought it off a picture on a webpage. He flew there with a check in hand and drove it home sight unseen. The fleet mechanic suggested to trade the tiller and the Ex-North Maine Quint in a a new truck and that was blown off. Both those trucks were maintenance nightmares, the quint was since the accident and the tiller was always out of service.

Anyone have more information on the Bolingbrook quint purchase? A few months back this site said they were purchasing a tower ladder. Is that the same rig? Are they replacing the quint they currently have running out of station 4? Seems odd that they would do that considering how new (2006/2007) their current quint is. I know their current tower ladder is old and well beyond its useful life, but it seems like their quint should have a lot of good life left in it. Are they replacing both the tower ladder and the quint? Just curious, any more information that anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks!

I truly wonder why Niles would purchase a new Tower before replacing Engine 3? How about the Towers to the east in Skokie and Linclonwood? Oops! I forgot that Wilmette has 2 of them. MABAS Division 3 is Tower rich. Someone sold them a bill of goods. The Chief should be questioned as to why he bought the used Truck initially? What a waste of time and money!
#20 by FFPM571 on December 16, 2013 - 7:18 AM
About time for Niles. They should have done that 2 years ago. That Ex-Trotwood OH truck they bought used was a P.O.S.
#21 by danny on December 16, 2013 - 1:59 AM
it is a shock i expected another tiller

So that’s interesting to hear and surprising that Niles is getting their first Tower Ladder. Josh, I presume that it’s a rear mount?
Now they are going to be like their neighbors to the south (Park Ridge) and west (Desplaines) and be part of the Tower Ladder Club. The Park Ridge Tower Ladder is just over a mile away from where the Niles Tower Ladder will be assuming that it will be going to Truck 2.
