This from Dennis McGuire, Jr.
This afternoon Engine Co. 62 pulled up to a 1 sty ord occupied auto repair shop with flames thru the roof. After crews gained entry the 22 Battalion requested a Still and Box alarm. A lot of overhaul and salvage after the fire was struck out.
More from Dan McInerney:
Here are some pictures from the still and box at 12300 S. Michigan Thursday afternoon. They had a fire in a 1 story vacant autobody shop. It looks like it may have been an auto fire in the garage that ended up getting into the cockloft and going through the roof. Squad 5 was on a still in the high rise on 41st St. and the 22nd wanted an elevated stream which he didn’t have on the still, so he boxed it to get a tower ladder. E115 and E75 had a 2.5” each led out and made quick work of the fire. Neither TL34 or Squad 5 (who eventually made it there from 41st St.) worked their platforms. There was a lot of overhaul afterwards, and the 22nd Battalion asked to EFAO to notify the Building Department that this was a vacant and open building.

Field Chief goes as RIT, and when a Box is struck, another Field Chief is assigned to the Box.

One EMS field officer is always assigned to RIT. The other may have been there to assist the ambulances, maybe just close by or requested. Nb

This fire is a good example of why there should be another squad company in service on the far south side. Squad 5 was initially tied up further north on another fire and by the time they were freed up to respond to this still and box the Snorkel was no longer needed,
A case can also be made to put another tower ladder in service further south like at Engine 121 and Truck 40’s house. Another reason why a squad would be good to have on the far south side is for roll over and some pin in accidents as from what I understand only the squads carry the airbags. Short of adding another squad it would make sense to put airbags (lifting) on at least some of the truck companies.
There are a number of other cities that have put airbags on at least some of their truck companies which they use on roll overs, pin ins and some other special-duty runs. This would take the pressure off of the squads for their airbags,
