Fatal wreck in Chicago, 12-24-13

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a one-car crash on Christmas eve that claimed the life of an 8 year old girl and left her 26 year old father in critical condition.

Eight-year-old Lauren Jessica Smith recently confronted her mother after finding receipts for gifts she had asked from Santa Claus.  The 3rd grader was looking forward to opening the presents, especially a karaoke machine, as she returned from a Christmas Eve family dinner in the south suburbs. She was riding with her father, headed for her grandmother’s house, when their car struck a curb and crashed into a tree in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to police and relatives.

The car came to rest on the passenger side on the grassy median, authorities said.  Lauren was found dead inside the car and her father, 26, was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Thursday morning, he still had not been told about the death of his only daughter, according to the girl’s mother, Loressa Hall.

Hall said her daughter, whom she called “Baby,” and her father were driving from an aunt’s home in Sauk Village Christmas Eve. He had stopped at his home near 56th and Wolcott Avenue to pick up presents and was then planning to drop off his daughter at Hall’s mother’s home, where Hall and her daughter were to wake up Christmas day.

Firefighters spent about 40 minutes working to free the father, then they continued to search the crushed car and found the young girl trapped inside, officials said.  Firefighters freed Lauren in 20 minutes, but their efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

Tim Olk was at the scene and submitted several images from the extrication.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 3-15-13

This from Erik Haak:

At 1631hrs on Friday afternoon, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office dispatched a working fire response to 1650 W. 75th Place.  At 1634hrs, Truck 50 confirmed a working fire in a 50×100 1-story ordinary commercial structure.  Truck 50 reported a possible truss roof and almost immediately called for the Still & Box.  Battalion 20 set up defensive operations with Engine 129 operating in sector 1 and Tower Ladder 39 setting up in a lot to the east of the fire building.  Squad 5’s snorkle operated on the parkway to the east of the building as well.  At 1656hrs, 2-2-5 pulled a 2-11.  Tower Ladder 34 was set up to the west of the fire building at the end of Paulina Street.  The first photo taken in my series was shot nearly an hour after the fire started.  The 2-11 was struck out at 1821hrs and companies stayed on scene chasing hot spots until just before 2000hrs.

More from Dan McInerney:

Here are some pictures from the still and box at 12300 S. Michigan Thursday afternoon.
They had a fire in a 1 story vacant autobody shop. It looks like it may have been an auto fire in the garage that ended up getting into the cockloft and going through the roof. Squad 5 was on a still in the high rise on 41st St. and the 22nd wanted an elevated stream which he didn’t have on the still, so he boxed it to get a tower ladder. E115 and E75 had a 2.5” each led out and made quick work of the fire. Neither TL34 or Squad 5 (who eventually made it there from 41st St.) worked their platforms. There was a lot of overhaul afterwards, and the 22nd Battalion asked to EFAO to notify the Building Department that this was a vacant and open building.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm 12-9-12

This from Eric Haak:

Early Sunday morning, fire erupted in an occupied apartment building at 2715 E. 75th Place.  Shortly before 0500 hrs, Engine 126 and Truck 49 reported fire from the second floor of the 25X75, 2-story ordinary.  The fire building consisted of 2 attached, side-by-side 2-flats and the fire appeared to originate in and was at first contained to the apartment to the east.  At 0511, the 23rd battalion elevated the fire to a Still & Box as the fire spread throughout a void in the drop ceiling and threatened to envelop both units.  Companies were originally removed from the building but made a second attempt at keeping the fire from taking the entire structure.  At 0530, companies went defensive as the interior attack was making little headway.  Engine 126 and Truck 49 were then removed from the front of the building and Squad 5’s snorkel was brought in as flames eventually spread throughout the cockloft of both units.  2-2-6 struck the box at approximately 0640.

Chicago 3-11 alarm fire and EMS Plan 1 with rescues

Chicago firefighters were busy overnight and early this morning with two extra-alarm fires. The Englewood Fire Alarm Office received calls around 5AM reporting fire in a four-story courtyard building at 714 E. 82nd St.

Radioman Dave Weaver has “must hear” audio and comments that:

Fire dispatched at the 2 minute mark as a Still & Box Alarm by the Englewood dispatcher. Jumpers from a courtyard apartment reported to fire companies while enroute. Engine 82 has a must-hear size-up at the 4:55 mark.

From the Chicago Tribune:

At least four people were injured and others were rescued down ladders when an extra-alarm blaze broke out at a courtyard apartment building in the Chatham neighborhood this morning, authorities say.

The fire started shortly after 5 a.m. in the building in the 700 block of East 82nd Street, possibly in a stairwell of the four-story building, and burned through the top floor, officials said.

The fire was quickly raised to a 3-11 alarm, the second of the early morning, and extra ambulances were called. The fire was struck out shortly before 7 a.m.

When firefighters pulled up, flames were shooting from third- and fourth-floor windows. Firefighters quickly raised ladders to rescue residents, he said.

“They had people hanging out the windows,” Fire Chief Michael Fox told reporters. “And they had one person who already jumped into the alley.”
