This from Eric Haak:
At 1624 hrs on Friday, December 7th, fire broke out in an abandoned 50 x 125, 2-story ordinary, apartments over commercial structure at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. Still companies included engines 38 and 109, trucks 48 and 32 along with the 14th battalion. Truck 26 was RIT with the 13th battalion. 6 minutes after first arrival, companies went defensive as Truck 48 reported a bad roof. At 1635 hrs the 14th called for the still and box followed by a 2-11 alarm 9 minutes later by 2-2-1. Squad 1’s snorkle operated from a vacant lot to the southeast of the fire building as tower ladder 54 took up operations in sector 1 on 16th Street. Tower Ladder 5 operated on Drake, directly to the west of the fire building.

The Daily Herald has an article about the City of Elgin implementing a plan to upgrade the public safety radio network to a new Starcom21 system:
Elgin plans to purchase a state-of-the-art, multimillion-dollar police and fire radio system that would more than double the current, aging system’s capacity, and would allow emergency responders to better communicate with their counterparts in other communities.
The city council’s committee of the whole gave its OK Tuesday to move forward with a nearly $11.7 million agreement with Motorola Solutions, based in Schaumburg, to purchase a so-called P25 interoperable communications system that uses the STARCOM21 radio system.
The agreement also includes a fire station alerting system and a next-generation 911 system that will eventually be able to accept text messages, videos and photos sent via cellphone, said Pat Hughes, large projects manager for Motorola.
