Tower Ladder 34’s 2002 pierce is total loss. The cost to repair it was over 250,000 dollars. The main and frame were bent to a degree. The basket and waterway was totally destroyed. At this point the main has been removed. The plan for the rest of the rig is to convert it to lumber truck 5-2-2. Which will replace the current 1996 converted seagrave truck. (old 26 or 29)

So it is more efficient to put a 24 year old rig back to front line status versus fixing the basket on the truck that was damaged???

tower 34 had the basket wrecked in a accident and who knows why they would leave a02 a spare but they also did it with 2 engines that are 02 models as spares now

The 2002 Pierce has been seen in the last few weeks at the Pierce dealer in Aurora as well as Van Eck in Elgin so based on that going to assume it has/had some issues.

Josh that’s the first thing that came to my mind as well , when I found out that Truck 42 was getting a new rig. It really didn’t seem to make sense to me either as there are still 7 out of 9 2000 E/One Aerial Ladders that are still in service as well as the two original Pierce Aerial Ladders at Trucks 52 and 47 which are 2000 models also.
However, I understand that the Pierce Trucks are the first Chicago Trucks to be equipped with an ALS supply compartment on board and that the CFD wants to have a spare rig that can be used for our ALS Truck companies.
For example when Truck 60 became an ALS Truck a few years ago they exchanged their 2000 E/One with Truck 8’s 2002 model Pierce because of the ALS compartment on board.
As far as Tower Ladder 34 goes I know that they were involved in an accident a few years ago where the Ladder couldn’t be salvaged. Perhaps someone could supply more details on that.

why would they take a 2002 pierce O.O.S to make it a spare rig and replace it with a brand new one when there is still a couple older trucks out there.

what happened to tower 34 rig? that it was assigned a spare as a permanent rig?
